In an interview with Computer and Video Games, the producer for EA’s Army Of Two: 40th Day has said that he feels Infinity Ward took the now infamous (and sadly massively over discussed) ‘No Russian’ scene “a little too far”. “We wouldn’t have done it, we didn’t do it,” said Matt Turner. “For me personally I think the alarm bells went off in a big way on that one because it was out of context. When the footage got leaked thousands upon thousands of people saw it on a clip not knowing what it was”.
“I’m not saying they were overreacting but people were generating these pretty outlandish opinions even though they didn’t know what the scene meant in the grand scheme of the game,” he added. “You’re playing a CIA agent, it’s designed to show the atrocities… it’s pretty awful and if you fail to see that side of it than you’re not getting the whole picture. That being said, I thought it took it a little far; it was pretty out there. But I like seeing that they have guts like that.”
“I say maybe they pushed it too far but in a way that’s a good thing because the media of videogames is very young,” he added. “We have to start pushing limits, making statements and seeing what kind of social and cultural relevance that we can have which hasn’t really been nailed yet. I think the were pushing towards that direction and trying to make people experience something truly terrible. Whether they were successful or not I’ll leave up to the players to decide, but I liked the fact that they were trying something new that people haven’t done before.”
“I think that’s really gutsy and my hat’s off to Infinity Ward for trying at least.”
Thanks, MUKARKAR.

Did they create that scenario for sensationalist headlines or to push the boundaries of gaming as an entertainment medium. Either way, Matt Turner comes across really well, in the article, if a little too optimistic about IW’s intentions.

They knew they tried to hard.
They did it for the media, the fame, the headlines.
Any press is good press afterall and it has seemed to work, some people are still going on about it now, as is with the Army of Two producers.
It worked.

I thought the scene was pretty good, it certainly generated emotions and made me stop and think, not specifically about the poor murdered people in the airport, more about the design of the level. It’s got people talking about it, even people who don’t play games and that’s got to be a good thing.

If that scene hadn’t been big news. Would the premier have been on the news?

The question I ask is – if exactly the same scene had been in a film, would it have gained so much press?
Somehow I doubt it.

The only thing being pushed too far is the discussion of that damn scene! Can’t we let it go already

+1
the scene worked well, it set up the beginning of the story. things like that happen in real life, so i don’t think it pushed any boundaries. Its a game for adults.

exactly, these things happen in real life, but people only have the guts to talk about a “VideoGame” that has a “fake” scene in its story

What i find deeply worrying is that this tedious level in an overhyped game is taken just as seriously and given comparable amount of print as the countless real atrocites committed by real american soldiers in iraq.

I don’t see why everyone’s raging about this scene, it’s in the story of the game, I liked the scene because it shows you that the game is focusing on reality, not just a hero who does everything right.

Activision havn’t broken any ground here. People take this completely over the top. Let’s look at InFamous, in that game, the player can choose to fry innocent civilians in the street and suck electricity out of them. Or they can choose to be the good guy.
In MW2, people can choose to play a LEVEL IN A GAME, or can choose to skip it completely, and then go on to shoot the next thousand random soldiers instead.

The scene was just one attempt at a sensational plot that made no sense in the slightest.
It was just stupid through and through.

Obviously when IW gave the monkey who wrote the story a typewriter they didn’t tell him about m.a.d (mutually assured destruction). The u.s and russia both have huge nuclear arsenals. They will never go to war with each other.Halos storyline is more believeable and better thought out.

Yup the believability of these games is astounding. One sec, my blue hedgehog friend wants me to go on a run with him to collect floating gold rings

Sonic isn’t based in the real world.Alternate realities in videogames need to be believeable.MW2 is not.

Hmm I guess you have a point, I’m just one of those that thinks games dont have a duty to portray realism when its just an entertainment piece. Not that im a fan of CoD because im not, its overhyped over-rated rubbish (although the ideas for the multiplayer is quite good, I dont like the gameplay though, just the perks/accolades/scores/leaderboards/classes etc.
CoD I get bored off quickly unless playing with a friend.. Off topic I know
Uncharted 2 online I can play for hours on end and be entertained

lewis815; I agree games like this do not have a ‘duty’ to portray realism, I guess it just isn’t their ‘call’. Hehe.

The idea of MW2s multiplayer is great i agree 100%.Shame about the players.Too much of a campfest.I tried the uncharted 2 beta but haven’t got it yet.I just spent £120 importing FFXIII and Demons souls but uncharted 2 is next on my list.

IG: That was weak dude :p
legalisemurder: legalise murder? lol, Yeah people do a hell of a lot of camping in MW2, thats why I play Ground War or HQ play modes that encourage players to get out and play more, bit more fun. And if you have only played the beta then you’ll love the full version, the beta didn’t majorly grip me, but the full release I love! Can’t wait for new DLC and updates. Although I’m hating being at work right now because I’m missing double XP.. grr..

I dont understand the whole “To many campers in MW2″ thing. I play a fair amount of Team and Mercenary deathmatch and dont see the problem. In comparison to older FPS titles stuff like UAV’s, Heartbeat Sensors and Killcams makes camping almost impossible. Now, if you are talking about someone taking up a good tactical position on a map and holding it well then as far as I am concerned that is not camping, just good play, and I’m sure more “Realistic” than running arounf like a headless chicken. Its your job to take them out, not theirs to run straight into your sights for an easy kill.

I personally think that it was excessive… but I also think it was a key plot point (the end of the level at least)

I didn’t approve too much of ‘no russian’ but it did give us a fantastic level for multiplayer action!!

Agreed, love Terminal but thought ‘No Russian’ was just a crass way of gaining more publicity for IW.

i think it worked, i get feel much emotion from certain bits in gamesonly happened once or twice, then IW topped it all off, i didnt feel cruel doing it, but all the people were dressed differently and they’re faces were all individual, some look as t hough they are just going to work, and then there life time is up
very well made if you ask me

People need to get over this. Its a game. And if that exact same scene was in a film people wouldnt be making such a fuss of it. And the game is rated 18 so the people playing it should be mature enough, its their own parents fault that there is so many 12 year olds on it.
