Criterion Considering Crash Mode? [38]

Criterion have posted a list of features that sadly never made it the already fabulous Burnout Paradise. A great shame that these never made it in the form of DLC, read ‘em and weep people..

  • The Moon – ‘The actual surface of the real Moon was modelled and it was drive-able. Lunar Challenges would have been totally unexpected – as would have been zero gravity Takedowns and Challenges. The idea was that we would have built a rocket pad on Big Surf. If you reached a certain Rank, or completed a number of specific challenges, you could drive there, press a button and the rocket would launch. Destination – Moon!’
  • Time Travel – ‘On a certain day, a time portal would have opened on the Island. When you jumped through, you would have found yourself on Big Surf, at another point in history. Maybe the Wild West…you could have done some Challenges and then jumped back.’
  • Motorcycles Versus Cars – ‘Whilst we would love to do it (some of us are die-hard ‘Road Rash’ 3DO fans) – we thought it best to keep them separate. Mixing Burnout with Road Rash – or Burnout VERSUS Road Rash as we saw it would have led to pandemonium. A bit like dogs and cats living together.’
  • Planes – ‘It was really cool to be able to see Paradise City from the air. It did not happen because of the way the game world was built. The city was never meant to be seen from such viewpoints. Think of it like a film set, a very big film set – meant to be seen from certain camera angles and not others.’
  • Helicopters – ‘Completely true. We wanted to have both Aerial Challenges and allow flying and driving players to work together. Players would be able to jump into containers swinging below hovering choppers. Even better, those hoops in the Airfield would have been able to be picked up by a heli and flown. That Freeburn Challenge involving jumping through a hoop would have been much more fun if a chopper was carrying it!’
  • More Islands – ‘We did have ambitious plans for a series of Islands. One was going to be purely off-road based. Hence we created the ‘Dust Storm’ dune buggy in anticipation for that. Our original dreams for Paradise were to create a series of Islands, all connected to Paradise City and each would focus on a different style of racing game. One Island was going to be completely circuit based – and be all marked up like a modern Formula One circuit!’

  1. This is old news.

    • From where?
Where was there an article that detailed every piece of missed out Burnout DLC, in traditional Tuffcub style?
Sure, they may have said “Criterion were gonna put a moon and planes in”, but it wasn’t like this.
      This is new.

    • So’s your face.

      • :D

      • Haha. You tell ‘em Gamoc. ;)

    • It’s not that old. Shush. I couldnt find it on TSA :)

      • Which of you guys checks the “Contact Us” submissions? Is it working OK? I used it to tell you guys about this what seems like ages ago. Even when I did submit it, it was a good few days old which I said on the form. The message was AWOL I take it then.

      • not old for some including me so thx for info. might make the next one maybe.

      • @skibadee I’m not getting at TSA for finally posting it, I think it very interesting and given how little reaction I’ve seen on the web to the “news” I’m glad they have. I was just wondering why it took so long after I used the “Contact Us” form to tell them about it. I’m kinda thinking it either never got to them or got lost. Something technical about the site may need fixing for all I know.

    • Actually this newspiece is new, it has style and I have never seen such a article so its NEW!!!

      • altho it is all copy and paste there… but at least it was referenced at the start. i wouldnt say the style is new…
but i hadnt read it so it was new to me anyway! sounds like some awesome stuff they should have done!

    • Old news to you, my dead singer of a friend, but not to us. Makes for great reading. Keep in mind that the community here is so bloody excellent that many of us don’t go looking elsewhere for news.

      *raises glass of Jesus Juice*

      • agreed. thesixthaxis is my one stop shop for news.

hence this is new news to me and i find it quite interesting :D

    • looks like a copy & paste to me…!
      I’M ONLY JOKING….kind of..

  2. Holy god that would be amazing.
All of these better make it into the next burnout!
Burnout is awesome… but this would’ve been 1000x more awesome.

  3. That moon idea sounds brilliant.

    • Yeah, That would’ve been fun.
And the time travel – vintage and futuristic cars would be fun.

      • I really like Burnout, and Sci-fi, so both these ideas sound like winners to me.

      • We already have a deLorean… so it would be an awesome car to jump into the past with.

  4. OK some of these are obvously the result of brainstorming, and some of them were never going to work, like viewing Paradise from the air, but its disappointing to see they canned the idea of more islands… does that mean Big Surf (and premium DLC in general) was a flop? I’m pretty sure they’d have carried on if they were rewarded with the wonga

    • I dunno, i liked Big Surf Island, just for you had a new area to drive and discover. People were saying that the amount of Freeburn challenges was too low, though. It was generally small and fast to complete.

  5. Fucking a! Man they should have done this, stupid EA pulling them away to other jobs :( I’m pretty sure those packs would have sold nicely.

    • They were a bit overpriced

      • After a year with Free DLC, who cares about the price?

      • Some of the cars where and the party pack, but the rest was brilliant :)

  6. THE MOON!!!. That would have been awesome. All of the others sounded really good fun as well.
Hopefully a few of these ideas will make it into the next Burnout game, assuming there will be one.

  7. ‘More Islands – …but we didn’t have time/space…’ … and queue Burnout Paradise 2. I can’t wait!

    • Don’t know how far off that would be, as they’re working on this years release of Need4Speed which won’t be completed until Autumn

  8. I loved to see these DLC-packs. Burnout is an awesome game.
Are there already plans for a complete new release?

    • Nothing has surfaced yet – as CC says, Criterion are working on NFS now..

      • NFS Burnout????

  9. All of these would have been great additions to an already brilliant game. Shame they never made it happen.

  10. I don’t think i’d have been that bothered about planes and helicopters. Burnout is all about the cars (even the bikes I don’t use much).
The moon and more islands would have been cool and I like the idea of time travel (even better if you could only do it by travelling 88mph in the Jenson 88 Special!)

  11. All of those ideas would have been amazing, hopefully they’ll hang onto that model of the moon’s surface for another game. :)

  12. The only one I think the game is actually really missing is bikes vs. cars.
I mean, the bikes are often much faster than the cars, but the cars can wreck the bikes very easily, leading to the bike drivers needing to be pretty skilful at evasion.

The moon and time travel both sound like simple easter eggs, the race circuit and extra islands would have been interesting, but I don’t think I’d have bought them. That’d have been too much DLC, not enough making a new game. Planes and choppers would be a mild amusement for 20 minutes, but aside from that of no interest to me.

  13. I remember seeing planes in the game at one point on their website and it looked pretty fun. Shame it never got released. It’s also a shame that they’re doing the next NFS game. I’d much rather have them make a completely new Burnout game with cars, bikes, planes and boats like they mention here. Make it open world but have some closed tracks as well. You could have all sorts of mayhem with those types of vehicles :D

  14. The cash cow was well and truly milked dry with the Burnout DLC but I would really have liked to see a few more Islands as Big Surf was sensational. NFS Burnout, as has been mentioned, would be heaven for me and hopefully all of those concepts mentioned in the article incorporated into the game.

  15. Just bought this on PSN at Christmas as it was on a special, I bought the game 2 years ago then traded it in, but I forgot how addictive this game really is. Shame they took the sponsor code option away from the under the hood menu though as I would have liked to driven the Steel Weels car again.
