The PSN Video Delivery Service, which we had to brave the dazzling lights of London (and Tuffcub) to tell you about at the launch event is getting some great titles this next couple of months, one of which seems to fly in the face of Blockbusters’ claims that “the only way to watch” Pelham 123 is by renting it from the big old yellow and blue shop.  Seemingly not, mr Buster.

January sees the release of (500) Days Of Summer, the cute G-Force, The Proposal, Imagine That, Julie & Julia and the aforementioned Taking Of Pelham 123.  In February, details are more scarce, but expect the wicked Zombieland, Aliens In The Attic and Ong Bak 2: The Beginning.  Pretty groovy, huh?  Did you rent any films over Christmas – if so, tell us what you think of the service so far.

  1. Zombieland! Look forward to renting.

    • Its a brilliant film, recommended as the film to buy for the next few months in my opinion

    • no offence, but i didnt rate it…to much love story, to little gore :(

(yes im an old school gorehound)

  2. Ive had a few film rentals… Blues Brothers, Dead Space and Kung Pow… apart from the wait to get them, i’m more than happy to rent from the store. Not so keen on purchase. I would rather have a physical copy. Not tryed the HD stuff yet… waiting for somthing that I dont actually want on Blu-Ray

  3. Can’t believe they’re still calling it the psn video delivery service, catchy.

  4. I bit the bullet and rented ‘The Boat that rocked’ in HD. (Brilliant film btw!!)

The service is sh*te quite honestly! Although it started playing straight away, it started buffering after only 2/3 mins. We let it go to about 25%, started watching and we still caught up with it, meaning we had to pause it again. It was more expensive than a Blu-Ray from Blockbuster, took much longer (have one 10 mins walk away) and the overall quality, particualry the audio was far inferior.

    • that is what is holding me back from using it.

my connection isn’t that great, and i’d expect this is what would happen me also. Play, buffer, play buffer and so on.

I’m surprised the audio was poor though. for a 700MB divx less than 100 is the audio track. I cant imagine that would have reduced the size of it for a HD download. I wonder what the problem there was?

      • Don’t get me wrong it wasn’t poor, it just wasn’t DTS HD MA ;)

      • i doubt i would notice the difference then :)

But i get your point, if you are downloading the HD version with the best quality picture, you exped the best possible audio.

      • An interesting point there regarding the audio quality, particularly when compared to expectations from a BluRay title. Couple that with the download wait and the inflated price over BlockyB’s and it’s a no-brainer at the moment.

  5. Ong Bak 2? madness. would love to have some more thai, jap and korean films on the store.

  6. Will be geting zombieland for sure.

but there is only one fult i can find with the video store and that is that there are NO films you can buy in HD and hardly eny that you can rent :(

  7. id love to use this but its to damn expensive, why pay 12 quid for something i can physically own for a tenner? and why rent an old film for like 2.50 when for an extra 50p you can own it? id love to start using this service maybe if they added a subscription with limited rents or something that was abit more cost effective, and that’s with out mentioning the crap internet connections i get during peak times (when ill be wanted to use it)

  8. I havent used the service yet as most peoples experiences seem to say that you need to download it a few days before you want to watch it. Now due to my organisation skills, of which i have none, i havent bothered renting or buying as i would most likely end up wasting money.
I also prefer having a hard copy, as a) My HDD is filling up. b) Hard copies mean i can take it wherever and c) Hard copies are cheaper.

  9. Was at least expecting some blockbuster titles in there but they all sound like straight to dvd crap.
I still havent used the service yet and dont really intend to, Blockbusters is still cheaper and all the extra stuff you can watch on a blu-ray is brilliant not to mention having a physical blu-ray collection is great.
We did rent Phelam 123 on blu-ray and I can recommend it, cant really go wrong with Denzel and Travolta.
Lets hope if they start charging for the service that it gets faster and more HD titles, cant remember the last SD rental we watched.

  10. Zombieland in HD, yes please :) .

  11. How can the world of pirated HD films come with DTS/DD sound all’round (and has done for years) and Sony (a f**king film studio!!!!) crank out 4.5GB HD films with two channel sound (at times).

    *facepalm*

I’m sorry but it beggars belief!

  12. I see, first day back and already taking pot shots at me. Bastards!

  13. One word… LoveFilm

    • exactly! psn video service sucks. blockbuster sucks. love film rocks! plus video games. great value for money. i might join! lol

  14. The Taking of Pelham 123??? i’m assuming it’s the shite re-make and NOT the classic original (Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw FtW!) why hollywood?? WHY!!!!

  15. any word of when its coming out in Ireland yet?

I’m looking forward giving out about it!
