Many of the games that we insert into our consoles as of late feature great storylines and great action, but there are many games that only provide one or the other. When Uncharted 2 burst onto the scene gamers were treated to, in my opinion of course, one of the greatest games to ever grace a console. Naughty Dog had managed to provide a great story featuring great characters and acting talent all the while maintaining a high level of action and playability. Sure, they aren’t alone when it comes to creating games with these attributes; the list is actually quite encouraging when you think about it. But there are many games out there that sacrifice story for action and vice versa, which leads me to ask: What do you prefer?
Let’s take a look at Modern Warfare 2, for example. No one can say that it hasn’t been successful - if they do, they’re stupid - but success doesn’t necessarily reflect on the quality. Modern Warfare 2’s storyline is as disjointed as a Chinese circus contortionist (in fact that’s insulting Chinese circus contortionsts) and if it weren’t for some of the action on screen and a lot of hype, one might say that it had the potential to fail. But, obviously, this has not put people off playing the game in their millions.
I received WET for Christmas after exclaiming that I enjoyed the demo some months back and this is a game that suffers from lack of story, in my opinion. The action is full-on and it’s exciting for all of about an hour and I blame it on the game’s poor story and its reliance on the blood-splattering action.
We would love every game to feature both amazing stories and amazing action but if you were to take one away, would you enjoy the game and if you had to pick, would you prefer action or the story?

I prefer a story that engrosses me and makes me feel emtion when I play. FFVII did this as did an import PSP trilogy called Tears of Vermillion. I really cared when the characters died, It has to have a decent story to keep me coming back for more.

Uncharted 2 is the ultimate game story and is just about the only mainstream game which rivals movies for character interaction.
Flower has an awesome story (and without speaking a single world).
Some games know they’re a game (like WET) and don’t pretend to be anything greater, therefore the constant arcade, almost cartoon style violence doesn’t need a story to be fun and enjoyable
Some games are just as lightweight but think they are something special (looking at you MW2) and as such the experience feels disjointed…. the story has pretensions of being something great and it really isn’t! Perhaps if it knew it was a game I would have enjoyed it more rather than rolling my eyes at the cheesyness of it all, illusions of grandeur spring to mind.

Enjoyed U2 very much and thought it felt like playing an interactive movie, but the ultimate game story? No chance.
Nothing there that hasn’t been done hundreds of times before in movies and games. Much prefer the story of something like Assassins Creed 1/2 or Bioshock. Genuinely interesting and immersive rather than just another rehash of whats gone before, however well presented. IW are well aware that the story in MW2 was crap, I dont know why anyone was expecting anything else. It was plain to see that the effort put into the single player campaign was much less than MP.
I like to have some games that have story, and some that are brainless blasts. Much like films, I love the Godfather movies but sometimes would prefer to watch Anchorman or Aliens. Variety is the spice of life after all.

By story, I meant through realistic character interactions as opposed to the swashbuckling Indiana Jones-ness of it all

I think ScottW-1976 has it exactly right here,
“I love the Godfather movies but sometimes would prefer to watch Anchorman”
There is room in this world for all the games its just up to you to pick your version of good and bad and refrain from heavily criticising other people’s choices

My biggest gripe with U2 was how linear it was, which can often be a problem with story driven games. Finished it in a weekend and trade’d it in immediately as wasn’t interested it doing it again. The charater development/interaction was very 1D and didn’t pull me in at all particularly (boy meets girl/girl double crosses boy etc). I reckon AC2 is far superior in almost every way (other than perhaps visually)

Just to play devils advocate here;
GTAIV is open world, one in which you can go anywhere, and practically do anything… but all the game has you doing is driving over there kill them, drive back again kill them, drive over there kill them…
In fact one of the most linear experiences you can have.
Linear games are no more linear than the alternatives.

Never a fan of GTA4 so cant really comment. The setting and basic premise fof the game did nothing for me. Open world is more about choice though, I can do any number of different tasks on AC2 in whatever order I choose and can happily spend and hour exploring the environment and learning about the locations etc without feeling I am being pushed along a set of pre-decided rails by the developer. I’m sure you could make it a linear experience if you just went from one task to another but you do have the choice, and thats the important thing.

I just can’t imagine Uc2 as a Open World game type.

Yeah a story with no action I can get from a film. Games with no story (or little) can get away with it if they don’t waste your time with a cack story. Think back to classics like Super Mario Bros 3. It has a piss-weak story but that really just served to explain the situations, then you got on with the playing.
The games that fail are ones that have a convoluted story that interrupts you playing but is too weak for you to care

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head, so to speak.
If a game has a story, make it a bloody good one. If it’s a bit naff, but the gameplay rocks, don’t interupt us playing the awesome gameplay.
Devs should know what they’re good at and play to their strengths (MGS4) lol.

Story all the way… I did enjoy that perspective in Dragon Age, as I have with all of the Bioware games going back to Baldurs Gate. I like to get attached to a character/npc’s. Probably why I like many of the Final Fantasy games I suppose

I like to play games, if they can integrate a gripping story too then great. Game play is superior imo.

Agreed, a story might be amazing but if the gameplay is wrong then I’ll never see it!

Story!
It’s the story for me everytime.
I can still love a game with fantastic gameplay and no story, but ultimately, if it has no story, I’m not really going to care about it after it’s finished and I’ll go away with a sort of “was that it?” feeling.
I don’t expect a game to always be picture perfect with an oscar winning story, but I expect it to at least have something that will grip me and pull me through the action.
Games like Metal Gear Solid 4 had nice enough gameplay, and without the story would only have made a mild impression on me for having some fun stealth. But because of it’s story it’s one of my favourite games of all time.
I just think stories inject emotion into games and they suddenly go from being something “fun” to something personal, emotional and all round better.

Games coped without stories for many years if you ignore the save the world/ all life/ princess. However as gaming has become increasingly mainstream the need for stories arose. Now a story is starting to become redundant again in favour of everything having online MP. Who knows what is the next fad for games.

Agreed that gaming in its early form was void of any real ’story’ and the gameplay kept you amused, a la Sonic.
But that was in an age when the game itself was relatively new and therefore the action was enough to amaze and entertain. Now that we have so much technology, we take the graphics and action for granted and it’s the story telling that really adds to the experience for me. All of my favourite games feature them – God of War, Uncharted, Fallout 3…etc etc. We are now at the point where games need to evolve past the point and shoot mentality in order to survive. You mention the lack of story within online modes and maybe this is why I very rarely play online; that and the fact that 90% of games are filled with absolute idiots. Imagine an online game/mode whereby you and your friends followed a compelling story, would this not add enjoyment to the experience?
When you look ahead at what is to come: Heavy Rain, Alan Wake, I Am Alive, The Last Guardian, Mass Effect 2 and more, it’s the story-driven games that seem to be peaking everyone’s interest.

I’m sorry, but according to you “FUN” has gone out of fashion and now all games need to be compelling, immersive and story driven. Rubbish.
I for one am just as excited about releases such as GT5, BF:BC2 and MAG as anything you mention above.
Oh and your “90% of games online are filled with idiots” is not only condescending but also inaccurate in my experience and is what I would expect from someone who rarely plays online.

@Scott – Firstly, what is with your extremely aggressive reply? Nothing in my comment warranted it as they were just genuine questions and opinions from a different point of view. I never once said ” fun has gone out of fashion and now all games need to be compelling, immersive and story driven”, I merely stated that from my POV I enjoy games a lot more if they have a great story behind them. Contrary to what you think I regularly play the arcade style games found on PSN for the fun of gaming.
YOU are excited by GT5 and MAG. Fair enough that’s you’re opinion (see what I did there? I accepted it as someone else’s preference)
My comments on Online play weren’t intended as condescending so I apologise if you have misunderstood them and whilst they may be “inaccurate” according to your experiences, they are extremely accurate according to mine…hence the reason why I no longer play online.
I’m glad you and your friends follow life, that’s good to know, but for me, gaming is about being able to have fun and participate in situations, worlds and stories that would never crop up in my real life. I’m sure an intelligent, athletic treasure hunter travelling the world and killing bad guys would have found Uncharted 2 very boring. Or I could read your comment another way and take it as you saying I have no life…

Sorry about that, must have been having a moment when i typed the replies.
To be honest was a bit annoyed by your scomments that “games need to evolve past the point and shoot mentality”, “it’s the story-driven games that seem to be peaking everyone’s interest” and “the fact that 90% of games are filled with absolute idiots.”. These, as you suggest, are your opinions but put across as statements of fact.

I really like story in the games I play BUT I think they have to be the right stories and for the love of god, not too complicated and long stories. One of the issues I had when playing Metal Gear (the last one) is that the story just became too detailed. I think for me at least, thats what worked so well with Uncharted 2. Sure, it wasn’t a big political statement but as a story that drove you through the game it just felt really well done. Or at the very least let the player drive the story by playing it rather than watch it…

PSN games can offer short bursts of gaming fun and be utterly void of real depth. A problem? Nope… you know what you’re buying most of the time. However, if you fancy something a bit meatier then we’re finally seeing some great character-driven games (UC2, for example) and fingers crossed Heavy Rain raises the bar even further.
It really comes down to what you fancy a bit of. Up until recently I’ve not been able to invest the time (and subsequent emotion) into a decent sized game but over Christmas that changed. With that in mind, I loaded up a “proper” game and finished it last night. That game? inFamous. Sure the story was fairly light but the action kept things going and the ending was really quite “oh wow… top stuff… I like that ending!”.
Then again, cc_star (and myself) are huge fans of Flower and it invokes feelings videogames rarely ever do, so much kudos to a small PSN game bucking the trend.
Ah, I’m rambling.

I was thinking of a similar topic the other day! It had to do with some people think MW2 is the best game ever! I think MW2 is a very fun game, but I wouldn’t call it great mainly because I think CoD games lack an immersive story! I think for a game to be truly great it has to excel in all ways! Most people being honest would say MW2 is a blast, I think UC2, AC2, MGS4, and Killzone2 (or to keep up the abbreviations KZ2… or is it just K2? Whatever!) are the great games, because the gameplay is superb, and the stories are amazing! So, basically I could play MW2 hours and hours more than UC2, AC2, and the others, but still think that the others surpass MW2 in being an amazing experience!
