Sony have continued their love of appreciation of Western cars for the cover artwork of Gran Turismo 5, with the star of the show the new Mercedes SLS AMG. The gull-winged supercar, with a top speed of 197mph, has been chosen from a total of nearly 1000 cars recreated down to what Sony are claming is the finest detail for players to race in the forthcoming title.

The game – the first so-called primary Gran Turismo title for PS3 – is the culmination of ten years of developing ultra-realistic driving experiences hand-in-hand with the motor racing industry. To celebrate the release of the box art, Polyphony have also let this gorgeous new video loose. The game is out (we’ve heard) on the 25th of March in Japan – still no Euro date.

Thanks, YobRenoops, and everyone else that tipped us.

  1. nice!

  2. I prefer this to the box for Forza 3 but I prefer the boxart for GT3 over this and I hate that bloody ps3 logo.

  3. Wasn’t expecting that on the cover but it does look good, hopefully the full game is more exciting the time trial demo.

    • I am hoping so too. The trial demo was disappointing.

      • Really bored me, felt no excitement not even when I mucked a corner up and spun. That should be exciting in a racing game.

      • Yeah, same here mate. The trial demo feels like playing a worse version of Forza 2.

    • Cover looks very good, and I prefer this new PS3 logo compared to the old Spiderman one.

As for the game, I tried a couple of laps of the time trial, it was extremely dull and boring. Graphics weren’t all that and there was absolutely no feeling of actually driving a car.

Here’s hoping the time trial isn’t anything like the actual game. Forza 3 is an excellent game, they’re going to need a very good game to beat that.

      • Ugh i hate when people say that the gran turismo time trial demo was boring. Its a time trial when were those ever fun?

  4. It’s a lovely box art, who ever designed that is a good designer.
It’s just stunning, something you would see on the shelf and think “That looks amazing, I must buy that!”

    • I agree, nice colours but not too lary. Simple and elegant.

Car is a good choice too, a modern design classic and I think this is the only (certainly console) game to feature it so it makes sense to have a unique vehicle on the front

      • +2 Beautiful box art. Hope we see more like this. I’d buy it and I’m not even a race fan :p

    • Never judge a book by its cover

  5. the release date for the car on the cover is march, perhaps its a hint at a worldwide release?

    • I doubt I even need to ask, but do you really believe that?

    • Good joke that.

  6. lovely.

  7. Does this mean they have stopped adding new features, so that there might not be any more delays? (Ignoring SCEEs input, of course)

  8. I think that looks simply gorgeous.

  9. I know it’s not Sony or Polyphony’s fault, but I hate those new colourful PEGI rating logos. Ruins the cover of this and many other games.

  10. That cover’s simply perfect. The open door is inviting, the styling classic, the colours classily subdued.
Hopefully the unveiling of the box art indicates that the release is only a few months from now. When you’re far along enough that you’ve figured out the box, and it’s unveiled to the public it tends to be 2-4 months away from release.
Which would fit rather well with a end of March release, like the JP version.

    Please say it’s so…

  11. I believe the video is at least a month old. – I might be wrong though… Looking forward to it anyway! :D

  12. It looks lovely

  13. Well judging the time trial gt academy thing solely on the handling/physics I’m looking forward to this game. I found it to be very fun.

If it gets everything being hinted at (1,000 cars, night races, dynamic weather system, deformable damage and damage to the handling/engine, NASCAR, IRL, WRC, amongst other championships, Spa Francorchamps…) I’m actually really looking forward to it. Prologue nearly killed my enthusiasm (cancelled my preorder I’d had for months) all this news is getting me into it again :)

    • Me too i loved the time trial , I spent 4-5 hours on it and got better and better . The handling is so realistic and I loved that , not everyone likes the realism i suppose .  I didn’t enjoy Burnout Paradise so its swings and wheelbarrows i suppose .

  14. Cover looks good, lets hope the game is as good as the cover..

  15. Looks very nice. I hope GB don’t let me down with my pre-order.
