This morning SCEI announced that the Christmas period sales for the PS3 (from the last week of November for 5 weeks) exceeded 3.8 million units, which is, according to the press release, a 76% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. Presumably due to a combination of new styling for the console, a cheaper price point and some killer exclusives, the PS3 “continues to surpass its momentum every year”.
Well, it could only go up, hey, but at least it’s going in the right direction now. Sony have also promised to ensure that the machine continues to deliver throughout 2010, citing God Of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, Heavy Rain and ModNation Racers as key titles for the system, alongside the new Motion Controller (with capitalisation, no less) and mention of 3D stereoscopic games and movies, only possible on the PS3 platform. All good, let’s hope the trend continues.

It’s nice to know that they are going in the right direction, and these new big-hitting games and features should see many more Playstation’s in the living rooms.

Lower price + better games = higher sales…
Now that is math I can understand…

No GT5 in the system-shifting list of games? I’d have thought that would be the biggest of them all (assuming the game is good).

In the everlasting 360 vs PS3 sales war, this doesn’t seem to mean all that much. In september, the figures were supposedly 31 million 360s to 27 million PS3s. Now the 360 is on 39 million, whilst the PS3 has no solid figure, but is on at least 33 million.
Of course it’s not entirely clear, but it doesn’t look like the PS3 will have caught up any on the 360…

According to VGchartz the PS3 has now out sold the 360 in Europe.
14.4m PS3’s to 14.23m 360’s.

Not sure how reliable this site is TBH, but they seem to like their stats and don’t seem to have any reason to make things up!?

But they’re still making a loss for every PS3 sold, right?

They’ll be breaking even within the next month or so, I think. After that, Sony corporate suicides will hopefully diminish
(worryingly, that’s probably true as they have a massive suicide problem out there).

I think it’s about titles they know are going to perform very strongly (either in reviews, in terms of sales figures or both). I think the jury’s still out on MAG to be fair.

It’s good to see sales have increased. Even if they’re still losing £40 on each console, I think it was that figure anyway.

Amazing what Japan’s addiction to Final Fantasy will do for sales, isn’t it?
