If industry rumours are to be believed this morning, Infinity Ward will not be creating Modern Warfare 3. They’ve said repeatedly in interviews for the past few months that what they’re working on after Modern Warfare 2 hadn’t been decided but if VG247’s source is to be believed, it will be something “completely different.” The site also speculates that either a Canadian studio or the new Sledgehammer Games could be handling it instead.
Though things got even more intriguing this morning when destructoid reported that their sources are saying that Infinity Ward’s new game will be an MMO. According to them, IW is hiring from Sony Online Entertainment and working with Blizzard employees who are helping to get the project off the ground. Blizzard are the MMO people, so if they are working together then it does give the rumours a lot of weight. Obviously now the speculation has to be directed at whether or not this MMO will be part of the Call of Duty franchise or a new game altogether as it’s already expected that Treyarch are working on a Vietnam sequel to World at War for this year.
Our sources say that if you have a little patience and wait a bit, it will all reveal itself in good time. But they also say that speculation is fun. And that Bourbons are better than custard creams.

Don’t know how an MMO will sell on a platform (360) which will involve 2 layers of subscriptions, I think we’ve had a look before at Blizzard becoming involved in Activision projects and it makes sense that Infinity Ward should be the target of their assistance.
An fps mmo would work, the weapon upgrading and perk loadouts are not that far removed from an rpg anyway, and if you customise your weapon/perks as part of clan then it does start to take on mmofps aspects. All that’s missing is petsistance.
Isn’t MAG an MMOFPS anyway? I’m sure the world has persistance with the objectives and battles continuing even when you sign out.
I think Bad Company’s objective based gameplay will be better suited to the MMO genre

but won’t they then aim this MMO at PS3 owners, if it will be too complicated with XBOX subscriptions? ALso, it tells us that IW are hiring from SONY and working with blizzard. It may turn out to be a PS3 exclusive!

I doubt activision will go down the exclusive route unless it is paid exclusivity. However, having personel from SOE could mean that PS3 is the lead platform.

I used to think MMO means the servers are always on and the game goes on rather then hosting/joining like in “normal” games.

so, the next modern warfare will be an mmo, you’ll have to buy the game and then pay to play it online.
sounds about right to me.

Bourbons! ZING!
Anyway, Infinity Ward are very good at making action driven around set pieces or set dynamics. I am not sure how they would fair with an open world enviroment let alone a MMO. It will be interesting to see if anymore builds from this.

WTF, blatantly hob nobs!
I am hoping MW doesn’t just turn into another FIFA with a barely different new version every year or so. MW2 is great but I really don’t think we need another game like that from IW, at least for a few years.
An MMO might be a good move for them, it’s a big cake so even if they only get a small slice, it will still be plenty

“Vietnam sequel to World at War for this year.”
Finally a game where Americans can’t bang on about winning it.

Get Mel Gibson on the board of writers, he’ll sort out those niggling historic accuracies.

I may be wrong and please correct me so if I am but aren’t SOE just finishing up work on the MMO DC Universe Online, so that would suggest to me that they are taking Blizzard’s expertise in the PC MMO world and the PS3 MMO expertise from SOE and combining them. If I am right then this is one hell of a coup

Surely not, I love MW2 and play it constantly at the moment however we don’t just want Modern Warfare rehash’s every 2 years and equally, IW don’t want to be known as that studio that only make Modern Warfare, they of course want to spread their wings and create good games across all genre’s. i reckon an IW MMO will be as good as MW3 would have been if not better

I love MW2 as much as the next guy, but in multiplayer all we got was MW1 with custom killstreaks. So as a result I haven’t been playing the multiplayer as much as I did with MW.
Spec Ops on the other hand was awesome. That made the game worth the price all by itself.
If they made the multiplayer more class based and tactical like Killzone 2 then I’d be happy with them making MW3, but I’ve had enough of the current style of camping / run and gun MW multiplayer.

Sounds interesting , I used to play Planetside many moons ago , that was a persistent online shooter with i think thousands online and was made my Sony . It wasnt bad and i suppose was fairly groundbreaking at the time . With todays technology it could have been something special . From what I remember there weren’t micro-transactions just a monthly fee and you ranked up just by playing .
Out of interest just googled it and its still knocking about http://planetside.station.sony.com/

Its a step in the right direction. The fast pace of the CoD franchise should make a good MMO.

Chocolate Bourbons are the king of all biscuits. Much better than Oreos, and they are tasty!
oh and sounds interesting.. Not sure i’d want to pay for a subscription though.

But if it’s hiring by SOE no possibilities to see it on other console?
So Infinity ward is owned by Activision.
How is it possible?

The rumour says that it IW are hiring people form SOE. This basically means that they are poaching some of their staff. SOE will likely have no part in the manufacture or development of the MMOFPS.

I think it’s a good idea, but maybe MAG beat them to the punch…and MAG is ”free”. But sounds interesting none the less, and I look fwd to seeing how they go about doing this. Hopefully it’s not a MW2 themed game.
