Modern Warfare 2 was always going to be big and the hype, the release and the takings haven’t disappointed. Now, in just under 2 months, Infinity Ward’s creation has breached the $1 billion landmark.
If Activision’s internal estimates are correct then Modern Warfare 2 can now sit among the cream of the crop from various industries, not just video games, as one of the highest grossing entertainment releases in history. Mr. Kotick said:
There are only a handful of entertainment properties that have ever reached the $1bn mark, which illustrates the power of the Call of Duty franchise and mass appeal of this game.
This follows news that ELSPA and GFK Chart-Track have announced Modern Warfare 2 as the UK’s best-selling game of 2009, despite the fact that it has only been on sale since mid-November.

Craazzyyyy.
But I’m not surprised. Does anyone know sales figures for COD games pre-modern warfare?

I think it did yeah but I mean like before MW, cause that seems to be when the hype became massive. I hadn’t played any COD before COD4.

Can you imagine no company wants to make a new IP. It shows that franchises and all-to-familiar gameplay sells.

it wouldn’t be so bad but mw2 is basically mw1 with more bugs.
people complain that there’s not enough innovation and they keep churning out the same crap year after year, well, you’ve got no one to blame but yourselves.

The charity donation they made seems like small change to them now

That an unholy amount of money, for a game that had a sub-standard storyline and more bugs than the previous game.

Wow, that’s a lot of money!
The Call of Duty franchise has seen a lot of growth over the past few years – it’s now a household name. I’m not going to be getting the next Call of Duty (Treyarch’s) as I don’t want to play a shooter set in the past again. And MW3 will be skipped by me if there isn’t enough innovation, MW2 was basically an expensive map pack for COD4..

Wow…but not a surprise really. Here’s hoping a better MW in the future…though I think it’ll be pay to play, in which I might not be participating in.

Its amazing how many people want to knock MW2, I think people jump on the band wagon of slagging off the most popular game to look cool. There is a reason its made so much money… Its the best online first person shooter out there! Well done IW.

I don’t think it is the best online FPS. I think it sold so well because COD4 took a lot of good ideas and did them very well much like Dead Space. It then traded off the back of this success.
