UK’s Best Selling Video Games Of 2009

Call of Duty at number 1! Who'd have guessed?

News just broke that Modern Warfare 2 was crowned the UK’s best-selling game of 2009 but what other games filled that list?

50% of the top ten across all formats belonged to the Wii so let’s split those charts up, shall we?

UK’s Biggest-selling PS3 games of 2009:

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
  • FIFA 10
  • Assassin’s Creed II
  • Killzone 2
  • Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

UK’s Biggest-selling Xbox 360 games of 2009:

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
  • FIFA 10
  • Forza Motorsport 3
  • Assassin’s Creed II
  • Halo 3: ODST

Out of both lists, Killzone 2 is the only game that wasn’t released in the past 3-4 months. You’d think that a game, a good one at that, like Killzone 2 would have the advantage due to the fact that it’s been on our shelves since Q1 2009. Obviously the hype surrounding Modern Warfare 2 was always going to push it above everything else but to then see every other top seller being from the last quarter of 2009 is surprising; okay so Halo 3: ODST was September but that makes it the very end of quarter 3.

Does this mean that these games were something special and that it’s all just coincidence, or does this mean that 2009 was a poor year for games?

  1. Or perhaps during the months where we have better weather and more daylight hours we tend not to buy so many games.

    • I usually buy games when they are released. It doesn’t matter what time of year it is.
If there are a few games I want that are released about the same time I will buy one and get the other/s when I’m finished the first or when the price drops.

  2. it would be interesting to have a comparison to see which were the most heavily advertised games of 2009.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the same names appear in the same order.

  3. Well FIFA is an obvious one, that always sells bucketloads. Assassins Creed 2 was highly awaited and probably on a lot of peoples Christmas lists. Uncharted 2, obvious again, highly wanted, advertised well etc. Halo is Halo is Halo, and Forza 3 was greatly wanted as well. Add to this that, with Christmas around the games that get bought for people are usually gonna be the newer ones rather than ones from March, and you get the reason why the end of year ones sell well.

Though I’d be interested to see the same from previous years. Was it the same story last year?

  4. Saw the Top 20 across all platforms before and noticed Uncharted 2 wasn’t in there. I don’t get it, one of the best games of the decade, with fair advertising and it doesn’t make the top 20 for the year, even though Wii’s latest drivel does?

Doesnt make any sense to me. Do bundled games count too? Cause Forza was in the top 10 and thats another game I find pretty boring…

    • Well, its console exclusive for a start so less sales. It also hasn’t had that much time and not a massive ad campaign. Considering Assasins Creed 2 was advertised on television and the original was more well known that Drakes first outing, also Killzone 2’s time on the shelves, i can’t say im suprised.

  5. NO surprises there.

Q4 is prime time for releases as it will be fresh in peoples minds for Xmas so people either ask for new games for Xmas or buy it not long after with thier extra money.

    • Could be a different story this year with the large amount of Q1 AAA titles coming up. We’ll find out in 12 months, roll on xmas???

      • I always get confused in talk of Q1, Q4 etc… because in my former line of work Q1 is Apr-Jun and Q4 is Jan-Mar

I’ll follow your convention for this comment though

I’ve just had a chat with Kris about the release schedule and Sony seem to have really loaded Q1 with plenty of AAA releases, but we know nothing about their Q4 release schedule, which is odd because we know there will Halo: Reach & Fable III two huge releases which will be easily in the years top sellers, as well as Natal which will probably feature the biggest advertising campaign ever associated with a gaming product.

Sony on the other hand have all their releases earlier in the year with MAG, Heavy Rain, GoWIII, MNRacers and even the wand all slated for a spring release, this possibly only leaves GT5 and The Last Guardian for later in the year, and although GT is a huge franchise, tLG is little more than a sequel to a cult product which nobody bought last time around. even the ‘Wand’ is supposed to be out sooner rather than later

Will Sony get squashed later in the year by CoD7 and MS’s behemoth franchises and no doubt massive Natal marketing campaign?

  6. By my bookmark feed you could have guessed what the result was or not even reading the article to that matter

  7. Most shops make the majority of the profit in December. Everything sells more then so new game releases will get bigger sales and with the market not as flooded as previous years (due to the delays to Q1) the big games sold by the bucket load.

But generally they are all quality games. Only Fifa 10 and Halo didn’t make the TSA readers top 4 for either 360, ps3 or overall.

  8. Why do so many people keep buying Fifa. It’s the same thing year after year yet a lot of those sales must be coming from people who buy each and every new version! STOP IT

    • why, each one’s different and improves on the last

    • Oh sorry 3shirts do we need to check with you before we buy a game?
EA build upon each Fifa game and ensure the £40 spent is well worth spending by improving and updating each entry highly significantly (at least to any Fifa fan).

No doubt it is the same concept but so is every COD game, Uncharted 2 is the same concept as the original, Gran Turismo’s are the same concept etc.

If Fifa was near-enough exactly the same every year it wouldn’t be so popular and would not s*** all over Nathan Drake.

      • Or maybe it is because FIFA is more likely to appeal to casual gamers than uncharted 2.

  9. Wooooo Fifa!
Suck on that Naughty Dog! Nathan Drake has been officially skilled.

  10. 2 exclusives a piece. not bad. shame killzone 2 didn’t beat assassin’s creed 2 because then it would be an exact match.

  11. Kinda weird that uncharted got beat by assassins creed, its exclusive ,was out earlier and got so much praise. ??

    • or are they not in order?

  12. Halo ODST? Are you kidding me? That game was LAME! Anyhoo, glad to I think it was a good year for games, even though the economy is crap. Next year should be good too. Anyone think next year will be a better gaming year?

  13. what the hell. assasins creed 2 over uncharted2???? wtf dude come on now.. we all know thats bs. these must be fixed or gamers are just retarded.. as for fifa. omg.. add a few extras and release it again.. ea see you lot coming.. mw2 i can see how it sold well but lets have it right, there must be millions of dissapointed fan boys out there that cant face it they got owned again by rediculous lazyness programmers.. DICE and geurilla games need to show these developers how to make a proper game and to keep the punters happy as they do even after release they still care about their product..
