We’ve extolled Brink’s wonderfully complex and creative character customisation process in the past, but what we have here is a much clearer and in-depth look at just how much you can change your character’s appearance when playing both offline and during online play.

We’re really impressed with the level of avatar detail Splash Damage are introducing in the game; injecting a dizzying amount of individualism into what traditionally has been a somewhat carbon-copy landscape. It also appears that there will be a lot of incentive to keep playing Brink, as it seems the majority of the custom ink and apparel is only available after unlocking it in the game.

Brink hits the PC, 360 and PS3 in the second half of 2010 and is published by Bethesda Softworks.

  1. Who’s doing the voice-over? Fantastically enjoyable to listen to.

    • The video is narrated by Paul Wedgewood, the game’s director.

      • Cheers, fella. Quite notable in how enjoyable his narration was. He should consider it some more.

      • Yeah, he’s into his game. Clear and informative narration is always enjoyable to hear.

  2. Me like.

  3. “Bad AArrrssseee” haha. Very strong English accent. Was class to listen to though

    • Yeah, noticed that. I didn’t think there was such a phrase as “bad-arse”. “Bad ass” is quintessentially American.

      • Hey. They screw with our language on a daily basis so it’s only fair we bastardise there’s somewhat. ;)

      • i don’t know what i’m going to do when i go to the cinema to get my ticket for kick ass later in the year, i’m english, i say arse, not ass unless i’m talking about a close relative of the donkey.

  4. Why the long face

  5. well i just hope they dont screw up the ps3 port (why is it EVERY demo/ingame action is shown on the ruddy 360?)

    • The above is from the PC build using a 360 interface. There’s some detail out there about how the recent Brink footage – despite having 360 face-buttons on display – is NOT from the 360 version. Strangely it’s all PC just with the 360 buttons mapped on.

Splash Damage have said that the console versions run “just as smooth” as the PC. Which I doubt, but we’ll find out soon enough.

      • Well thats weird, is this the case with most of these ‘promo’s’ though? as i state everytime i see some new gameplay it’s ALWAYS the 360 (well apart from PS exclusives, obviously) why not map the PS buttons just to make me happy? eh!
It’s a conspiracy i tells thee….ooh arghh! that it be, that it be…

      • It is weird, but it is not the case with most footage.

In general, the 360 version is usually chosen purely because, as demo tools go, Microsoft’s are still better than Sony’s. So, if you want to mess around with the promo, it’s easier to do it with the 360 version than the PS3.

That and the fact that the 360 is still the lead console more often than not. So demo builds are usually more polished on the 360 before it comes time to release.

      • The Last Remnant had 360 interface on the pc version as well

  6. although its a bit hard to get my head around the art style, the more i hear of this game the more i look forward to it.

  7. Looks good, but based upon the video above, I reckon that ModNationRacers has more detail in it’s character customization.

  8. I’m assuming there was a voice-over to that clip, which is disappointing as my computers sound has packed in (The actual sound thingy on the inside, not the speakers).
Looks really in-depth though, it’s looking really impressive so far.
I’m thinking this may be one of my surprises of 2010, much like Borderlands was for me in 2009.

    • There was voice over from the director Paul Wedgewood. You’re not missing much. Just talks through the process of picking archetypes, skin tone, tats and clothing which are unlockable in the final game.

Also mentions that he decks his guy out in orange “because that’s the colour of my clan.” Which I find really interesting. Will be cool to see clans experiment with the tool to create some truly noteworthy and unique aesthetics.

  9. loads of customisation options there, one rather big option lacking though, can you guess which one. how do you do an angry face on here?

    • Well, considering your gravatar is of the famous “The Kiss” image, I’m assuming you’re female.

Females were considered. In fact, Splash Damage said the following on their forums:

“I’d love to see female characters in Brink too – I think we all would! In fact, we did explore female characters in our early concept art
However, given the realities of development, we had a choice between having a wide range of options for male characters, or a much more limited set of clothing options that allow for both genders.
We figured it would be the best use of our time to have a big set of quality customisation options for males instead of less and lower quality for females and males.”

      • my reply to splash damage, i would like to buy your, however game given the realities of my finances i have a choice between this or another title that allows me to create a female character.
i figure it would be the best use of my money to play a game i will enjoy that allows me to choose the gender of the protagonist instead of one i might enjoy but decrees that i have to play as a man. :)

still annoying but at least they have a sort of valid reason, not like many games that offer next to no customisation yet still don’t offer female player characters, that includes 99% of fps titles.
mind you that doesn’t let off the tony hawks devs, for either the lack of female options or the games themselves.
