PS3 To Get Native Version Of Tetris

Minis version not good enough for Tetris, apparently.

EA’s Tetris is the only Minis title that currently doesn’t run on the PS3, despite being one of the most requested games for Sony’s console.  However, that’s going to change this year because EA are working on a bespoke, HD version of the all-time classic rather than just allowing the Minis port to run.

“EA are currently working on a PS3 version of Tetris that will take full advantage of the capabilities of the PS3,” said Adam Grant on the EU PlayStation Blog today, “and provide the best experience.”  There’s no date specified, sadly, but Grant has told us to “look for this version to be available later this year.”  Let’s hope they take full advantage of the hardware.

  1. so this tells me that we will be paying more for the tetris game than if it was a mini. dont get me wrong i like tetris but not enough to buy a £6 + game

  2. Let hope they still keep the essence of the game true to the classic. The psp version deffinately has, its just as much fun as it was on the original gameboy.
Will be looking forward to this one.

  3. I’ll probably be a sucker and buy this.

  4. I’m interested to see quite how they make Tetris “take full advantage of the capabilities of the PS3″ !?!

    • hahahahaha me too! Will EA manage to fill a Blu-ray for Tetris?!

      • And use all the SPU’s?

    • Maybe it’ll be in 3D ;)

    • Hopefully EA will sub-contract to Polyphony Digital and there’ll be replays of blocks tumbling through the air with light glinting beautifully off every gleaming surface as they fall. Only problem is, the game wouldn’t see the light of day til 2012.

Razor-sharp satire aside, I’d probably buy this as long as it was less than a fiver and had both multiplayer and trophies. I bought Tetris Worlds as a stopgap but it’s really, really bad (unless you’re buying it off me on Amazon, in which case it’s an absolute bargain!).

  5. So that’s the reason the mini doesn’t work. The whole point of tetris is the gameplay not whether the graphics are HD or not.

I never liked Tetris anyway even on my brothers gameboy, I was always a columns man so comeon Sega, jump to it – just make sure it has the original soundtrack!

    • No the reason why Tetris mini doesnt work is because EA had the license for portable versions of Tetris, not console versions – they must of got a new deal sorted, but why they just dont use the mini version im not sure.

      • Money. They smelt the faint whiff of a chance to screw extra quids from people who want the mini on their PS3

    • Let’s hope that if Sega do release a version of Columns it’s better than the iphone version which, umm, doesn’t work.

It’s not the best scenario for a video game :)

  6. Money grabbers… but people will pay so can’t blame them really…

  7. What it means is Tetris Trophies.

    • Tetris 3D

      • Like on the VirtualBoy?

  8. I’ve already got the minis version so why this?

    • See above: trophies.

      • I’ve already payed 3.99 for the game? to get another for trophies seems ridiculous

  9. TETRIS!

    • I see why you are a writer :)
