Most games nowadays have some form of online and/or downloadable content but that doesn’t make it a necessity. Well apparently EA have different thoughts. Their COO, John Schappert, stated during the company’s Q3 financial earnings that “every one of EA’s releases will have an online component—both downloadable content and online play.”
With the current line-up scheduled for 2011 it probably won’t be hard for them to keep to their promise but with a few unnamed titles as of yet, it could still prove to be a bad choice. The DLC could also be an attempt to pull us away from buying games second hand. They’ve done it before with The Saboteur and Mass Effect 2, remember?
Thanks, Kotaku.

That online would be terrible. Unless maybe a co-op mode where yu must help each other escape. Similar to the run away bit in Uncharted 2 with Elaina (Can’t remember how to spell her name
)

Like Spotter and rht1992 have said, an online component to a Mirror’s Edge sequel – assuming it’s very similar – would probably be a race mode, where you could race your friends in real time across and in buildings! Having ghost running in front, next to or behind would probably ruin a few jumps and runs – adding to the fun
Now that would be AWESOME!
If however they tried to run any sort of co-op within the story mode or something similar, then yes – it would ruin it completely..

“Their COO, John Schappert”
I take it that is supposed to be CEO?
This is just EA making a smart business move, trying to make as much money as they can with dlc and capture the people that believe online is required in a game.

I don’t know if that’s good news or bad, especially if, like you say, they barr DLC from second hand games.

I’m failing to see why they would bar 2nd-hand games from DLC. Like The Saboteur, they could sell multiple instances of DLC during the games lifetime, as it get’s sold and resold. So now they have an opening into the 2nd hand market which they would never have had before.
I don’t believe they wanted to pull people away from buying the game 2nd Hand so much as get a slice of the pie that will always be there but upto now has been out of reach. Now they’ve got their fingers sticky and they like it

Well EA are taking a risk with this statement, as long as the games implement online in a decent way, then im not too fussed

Considering that DLC mostly just benefits the publisher, this isnt really surprising.. Most likely it’ll be of the “Unlock all the bonuses without working for it” type that they love so much. As for online, well you cant just crowbar MP into any old game, it needs to be considered properly.. I expect a lot of bolted on afterthought here.
This makes me worry that EA are returning to the bad old days.. I hope Im wrong.
