It’s probably fair to say that no PlayStation 3 exclusive has had as much pressure piled onto its shoulders like Heavy Rain. With promises of groundbreaking, innovative and original game play and content, a lot is riding on the success of Quantic Dreams’ latest offering. As a result, a lot of eyes will be looking to the demo to offer a glimpse of just what makes Heavy Rain special.

I’m aware that there are a few among you who are trying to keep as much of Heavy Rain a secret as possible so you’ll be pleased to hear that I won’t be revealing anything in the way of story in this article.

The first thing that I noticed about the game was the graphics. The surrounding world and character design is impressive and the atmosphere is perfectly dark, wet and miserable throughout (in a good way). Some of the objects appear to have had less attention given to them graphically but when you’re given a close up of the character’s faces it’s easy to understand why – they are so detailed and realistic that you actually wish they were on screen for a longer period of time.

The controls seemed daunting at first with all sorts of instructions being given to you within a short period of time and I actually thought to myself “this is going to take a while to learn”. Imagine my surprise when not two seconds after that thought I found myself moving and interacting without a single problem or worry. The walking is a little clunky and stiff and, when coupled with fixed-position cameras, you get the feeling that this will be one of the frustrations when playing the full game.

When it comes to interacting with objects the on-screen prompts are large enough to remain clear but small enough to compliment the action rather than dominate the scene. For the most part they are simple but there are occasions when you end up playing a game of Twister with your sixaxis controller. This may sound like a bad thing but I actually found it quite amusing and it certainly added tension to the more action-packed parts; whether it could sustain those feelings through an entire game has yet to be seen.

Part of the demo allowed you to enter a kind of detective mode thanks to some hi-tech equipment. Fans of Batman: Arkham Asylum will be familiar with this detective mode as it’s almost identical to that of the caped crusader’s. It’s not exactly detective work as it points out evidence and your role is just to walk around and collect it but it is offering a different game play style to other characters.

All-in-all the demo has whetted my appetite for this game even more. The story is intriguing and even in the brief demo you get the impression that becoming attached to people is going to happen quite quickly. The voice acting is good and the character’s emotions on screen come across brilliantly. Above all else it is offering something completely new for this generation. Fahrenheit, in my opinion, is probably one of the PlayStation’s most overlooked titles but judging by the demo, there is no way that Heavy Rain will suffer the same fate.

Comments

Please note that all comments are the opinion of the individual author and not TheSixthAxis.

  1. to reiterate what i said in the earlier article about the demo it has reassured me about the game somewhat.
i think i’ve been pretty vocal about my dislike for QTEs but the branching action section of the demo shows that they can work well when they’re not just all or nothing.
one problem i did have with that section was that you become so intent on watching for the icons for the buttons that you miss the action, maybe some sort of replay option at the end of a chapter might be good so you can watch the action without the distraction of the button presses.
i liked the bit where you played the guy from the fbi, though a run button would have been nice.
and i swear in the first part, i swear that was the woman from that very early e3 trailer they put out.

  2. I found the demo pretty terrible tbh. The contols were far from impressive and it is all way too slow paced for my liking.

Sure its great you have options to plot many paths through it but apart from that I just dont see the appeal.
Maybe when people have played the game and experienced a full playthrough they can change my mind.

  3. I resisted playing the demo through fear that it would spoil something major. I want to play the whole game through in one go so not to break the immersion.

  4. I love how this game is looking, and i am extremely excited, but seriously, someone has to admit that the movement is clunky as hell when trying to walk. It’s like walking with cerment shoes for god sake ><

    • The walkings fine if you know how to do it. Treat the game as normal moving (with the left stick) but hold down r2 all the time. Then when you release r2 you have the ability to look around at things. It’s actually quite clever in my opinion.

      • i think they chose that option for movement because you can change the camera with a single button press, when you do the direction you want to walk in might correspond to a totally different direction on your stick, this way you just hold down r2 and your character keeps walking in the same direction, but you can still direct them with the stick, the only other option would have been resident evil style rotational controls.
the only problem i have is that you walk a bit slow, if they’d used analog control for the walking, pull r2 a little to walk and all the way to run, it could have helped.

  5. I really enjoyed the demo, and I realise that it was just a small part of the whole, but your actions didn;t really have any consequence, other than (a) what info you got out of the woman, and (b) the first line you spoke after the fight.
It reminded me of those Choose Your Own Adventure books, where it gave you three options, and each of them gave you a different sentence then sent you on the same next step.

  6. i really did enjoy this demo alot, very glad i pre-ordered it cant wait for the full game now !!

  7. The demo wasn’t too impressive imo

  8. awesome demo, and glad i chose to pre-order the special edition. found walking a tad strange to begin with, but you soon get used to it. graphics, story, voice acting, and atmosphere were all top notch. i never noticed any screen tearing at all, that some have been complaining about.

  9. I hated the detective mode sunglasses, really chipped away at the realism and that affected the atmosphere for me. I couldn’t see why they couldn’t have just had you “notice” clues in the same way it prompts anything else. That instant DNA analysis is probably going to turn out to be a major gimmick too.

    • I agree with the DNA thing. How creepy, to know everything about someone from their blood or sweat :S
Also I think the second part of the demo would be more fun if the actions made their affective something else in the game (as Im sure they do). EG if you dont go up the mud bit, then you have nothing to tell the detective about when you get back to his office.

  10. Fahrenheit was awesome even with the weird plot in the final moments lol i hope the demo draws more attention for people to notice this game and help it avoid the same fate as an overlooked and underrated game like Fahrenheit was.

  11. big fan of the demo so it will be a day one buy for me.

  12. I got to play the demo last night. First impressions where oh no a button timed game Like in Quantum of Solice on 007 mode, But after a minute or so i quite got into it.. I realy like it, its a pleasnt change from the Shoot em up genre that i normally go for. This is on Pre-order for me..

  13. I loved the demo, with the exception of having to hold down R2 to walk.
