Sony have revealed that the secret game we were all waiting to hear about is an all new SOCOM.

The game is being developed by Zipper Interactive, the developers of 256 multiplayer game, MAG. This new SOCOM has been created from the ground up for the PlayStation 3 and we are told that  “you’ve never played a SOCOM game like this”.

Here’s the story from the blog

In South East Asia, a revolutionary army has seized control of a country bordering one of the world’s most vital waterways; threatening to disrupt he global economy.

Your mission is to step into the well-worn boots of the Ops Com, a NATO Operations Commander of an elite, five-man squad. You must venture deep into inhospitable jungles, city streets and crumbling urban ruins to engage an army of rebel fighters and discover their plans. Although you’re vastly outnumbered, you’re armed with the latest weaponry and your men are second to none – but do you possess the stealth, speed and tactical thinking to lead them to victory? Time is not on your side: you have just six days to complete your mission. To emerge victorious, you must lead from the front, maintain control of the situation and fight with sheer intensity.

In addition to the single-player story mode, the game allows you to play in matches for up to 32 players giving you the choice of playing in the guise of more world-famous Special Forces units than ever before and we are also promised that as it’s SOCOM the realism of the experience will be second to none.

The Playstation Blog will be publishing an exclusive trailer of the game tomorrow, so keep an eye out for that there or here on TheSixthAxis.

  1. Okay my first reactions were “WTF? GTFO. SOCOM?”
But now I think of it, at least it’s by Zipper.
Also it’s built from the ground up, so hopefully it will be good – it’s just the Socom brand is extremely tarnished after Slant 6′s abysmal attempt.

  2. oh another shooter

    • I for one am very surprised, I am shocked that we are getting a sequel to Socom, since that has never happened before…

Seriously, when are we going to learn? Geoff Keighley is a straight up lier, he has done it before, and he will do it again.

Fool me once; I’ll be dissapointed.
Fool me twice; not particularly surprised.
Fool me three times; why did I get my hopes up.
Fool me a fourth time; this is a point that only gamers would get to.

  3. … Disappointed

    • me too.

      • Me 3…genre overkill, how about some great RPG’s or platformer Sony

      • or even a musical rts lol

    • Me 4 :/

  4. hell yeah :P

  5. Pass – I was burnt on the last shitty SOCOM release so I’ll keep my money for something else thanks.

    • That’s because it was not made by Zipper. It will better than the last.

      • Hopefully MAG is nothing to go by.

    • Hey from what I’ve heard MAG is surprisingly addictive and very good. It also seems a lot more team-based and strategic than other games like Modern Warfare 2 which is just about shooting the other guys and that’s about it.

      • Mag is amazing best online ive ever played….ever

  6. i dont think anyone saw that one coming

    • I think your right.

  7. I can see why this wasn’t saved for a trade show now

    • They didn’t, a big announcement is saving it for E3. Short of a “there’s a new SOCOM” press release this is pretty low key.

  8. IGN has screenshots.
