Tameem Antoniades, co-founder of Heavenly Sword makers Ninja Theory, has been speaking to CVG regarding 3D and how the current generation of consoles will cope with the technology.
Speaking to the site,
The problem is that to do 3D properly you need to render 60 frames per second, per eye and at least 720p resolution per eye, so in essence that’s 1080p rendering at 120 frames per second, and the current generation can only process very rudimentary graphics at that spec and that makes sense if you consider very few games run at 60fps, and even fewer at true 1080p due to processing restrictions.
He also added,
I think the technology’s limited now, so you won’t be able to play stuff that looks like Avatar – the movie – in 3D.
Every generation has to be at least five-to-ten times more powerful than the last, so I think we’ll get there in the next generation. I think that will be totally revolutionary for games.
So there we go, don’t be expecting your mind to be blown away with the 3D update which is coming to the PS3 this spring.
Maybe we should just save those pennies for the next Sony console, who knows by then 3DTV may actually be a more affordable option.
