101UP is reporting the sad news that 73 SEGA employees have been laid off today as part of a “business reorganisation” aimed at seeing the company focus more on social and digital games, with 36 employees in SEGA’s San Francisco office and 37 in London affected.
In a statement apparently received by the website, SEGA says that “digital platforms have taken an increasing share of video gaming revenues… and it is now the company’s intention to fully embrace change [and] through innovation and quality, take up a leadership position.”
The new focus on digital delivery is part of SEGA’s “ongoing expansion”, according to Sega West president Mike Hayes, who says the redundancies discussed were mainly due to the two different offices having two sets of employees doing essentially the same tasks.
Our heartfelt condolences to anyone affected, especially our friends in London.
