Gamesbrief analyst Nicholas Lovell has spoken out about Ubisoft’s “draconian” DRM to PC World, believing pirates are now having a better gaming experience than people who actually pay for the products. The claim is in connection with publisher Ubisoft who came under fire from PC gamers recently regarding games such as Assassin’s Creed II that require players to authenticate and remain connected to Ubisoft’s servers to play a game with no online component.

Asked what alternatives Ubisoft could have engaged in to protect their property from digital thieves, Lovell points to the Steam model.

“It seems crazy to me that Ubisoft didn’t emulate Steam, which by some estimates has more than half the market, and instead went for their own draconian system.”

The analyst also has some novel ideas about how to combat the pernicious problem of getting people to actually support developers by forking out cash for their games.

“Give the whole game away entirely for free, make it small and charge for DLC. Slash the marketing budget and rely on pirated copies to spread the word about how good your game is, then charge for additional elements.”
