29I was watching with a sense of crushing inevitability as Germany guaranteed we meet them next, so this is a bit later than usual. It is a similar feeling of certainty that accompanies the viewing of FirstPlay each week as the hope of seeing something new and exciting gives way to the familiar feeling of disappointment. That disappointment is akin to what you would feel if having just brewed yourself a cup of tea you opened the packet of Digestives to find that you have managed to buy the one packet the shelf-stacker dropped and that there is not one decent dunk-worthy fragment left intact.

I didn’t find it disappointing at all. It’s a digital games magazine. What else can you expect other than reviews, previews, pictures and a bevy of other videos.
Also, it may be noteworthy that from this week onwards you can now view screenshots in FirstPlay as a slideshow. To do so press L2 while view a screenshot to play. It’ll automatically move to the next screenshot as soon as good ol’ Lucy Porter finishes her comments.

Ignoring individual titles for a moment, I find the Previews lacking each and every week. Surely, with hundreds of titles coming out for the PS3, you’d like to think they could have two, maybe three Previews per week. Subsequently, these would evolve into two, maybe three reviews per week. I think we had one week with zero reviews! The format is sound, the presentation suitably slick, but this will live or die by its content.

I enjoy it for what it is. The tight script and Lucy Porter’s delivery are a pleasant bonus. Too often people focus on utility without enjoying the more refined elements of things. Android vs iOS innit, amirite?

Why would you pay to see a couple of reviews and a few other bits, its all free online. It was worth getting when the minis were free but not no more.

Problem is, PSN Plus is coming next week, and now we have 2 services promising us, “exclusive content”. I notice at least one mini from PSN+ has already been given away by FirstPlay. We’re either going to end up paying 2 subscriptions for the same stuff, or having to subscribe to both to get everything, Game X demo exclusive to FP, Game Y demo exclusive to PSN+ etc (damned either way really). They really should bundle this in with the PSN+ subscription like the Americans are with Qore.

tbh I thought that was already the case, but thinking about it Firstplay is a Future Publishing endeavour, while Qore is a Sony in-house effort. I hope they sort something out, but then, this is SCEE we’re talking about…

It isn’t a Lara trailer, it’s a trailer for the next episode of FirstPlay which will have a feature on Lara.
(May want to change that “FirstPlay 012 Trailer” to “FirstPlay 013 Trailer” Watchful)
