In a bizarre twist of fate, Bloomberg are reporting that a deal between Sony and video serivce Hulu is imminent, with the feature possibly arriving on the US PSN as early as next week. Hulu, an on-demand TV service for users in the US, offers free access to content from the likes of NBC, ABC and the Fox network. The solution on the PS3, however, is expected to cost in the region of $9.99 per month.
The rumour is quite tasty, as Hulu have been in talks with Microsoft about adding the service to their Xbox 360 console for some time. Though those talks are still ongoing, it now appears the feature might actually appear on the PS3 first.
Famously, Hulu is not available outside of the US due to licencing issues, though the company are looking at ways of broadening their reach to encompass international markets.
The paid service is viewed as a competitor of Netflix and would only be available to PS3 users inside the United States.

I use a program called PlayOn that streams Hulu and local media to my PS3 for free, already. I bought it when Hulu started blocking non-PC devices last fall. ;)

I know it’s easy to think that $10 is too much to pay – and it probably is – but keep in mind that we don’t know what all this entails.
I know media server programs are a good way to stream content like this, but remember that very few people use or even know what media servers are. Also, I can tell you from experience that media server programs don’t work well with very old or slow computers. Something else to keep in mind is that a lot of the “good” media server programs are starting to charge for them; PlayOn is a prime example.
In all likelihood, it’s not going to be worth the money, BUT, I can see someone who doesn’t have access to local channels due to poor reception seeing the value in this, especially if they pull a fast one and offer up something that the PC version doesn’t currently have.

I agree completely. But what about if us US users sign up for Playstation Plus? Will it still be a $10 fee?

And we get free iplayer on PS3, heh heh.

Actually we get iPlayer for £145.50 per year as part of the licence fee…
As for Hulu, hasn’t a subscription model been on the cards for a while now? After all once you get it streaming to your TV for free why would people in the US bother to pay for TV subscription to those channels?
Does Hulu do HD content? Maybe the paid for service includes higher quality? And who knows how long it will be until they start charging for access to their web based service…

101% correct, You do not need a TV license for BBC iPlayer.
But if watch something being show live/recorded as be broadcast you do! So if was watching live broadcasted stream of BBC 1 then you would.
PS I do not the pay TV tax.
PPS Few months ago the dumb TV revenue tax service wanted to take me to court for watching VidZone. It never went to court I wonder why?

Sucks to live here then……
The likelihood of a Hulu appearance this side of the pond is, well, unlikely. The content produced by NBC, Fox etc. is all broadcast by different channels in every country and that just leads to a confusing tirade of deals with the original producer and the broadcasters rights to the content. I reckon Sony should/might start their own On Demand service globally within the next few years to battle this flaw that faces them. Either that or we could see some sort of link between BT and Sony or maybe, maybe even Virgin…… I f**king hope not though…. :D

Hulu has always been free on the internet. So why should I have to pay for it, to use it on my PS3 through PlayStation Plus. What a rip off.

Madness for not making it available exclusively for the PlayStation Plus package. This is the kind of service that would help drive PS+ subs.

Free for PSN+ consumers, I assume?
(Haha.)
