Now in its fifth year, the Develop conference will this time play host to Sony’s senior director Mick Hocking, who will be giving an insight into the future of 3D games. Entitled “3D: The Next Dimension in Gaming”, Hocking will show the development of 3D entertainment, from its inception in 1850 to the present day, and push why he thinks it’s here to stay.
Sony, then, are putting everything behind their latest technological venture. “I’m really excited about being able to give this talk and giving Develop attendees the chance to play some of our 3D titles for themselves,” said Hocking. “I’ll also be sharing some of the unique tricks and techniques required to create a top quality 3D gaming experience.”
The talk will cover what it takes to convert a game to 3D, how 3D has changed the visual language of the screen and will also cover exploring commercial opportunities given the fact that there’s 35 million “3D enables” PS3s on the market. This, I assume, will be all about how to get people to buy into 3D technology, and how to convince them we all need 3D TV sets.
Develop 2010 takes place at the Hilton Brighton Metropole from 13 – 15 July.

Good luck with that. Take-up has been slower than their already low projections and when I discuss 3D with non-hardcore gamers they just laugh and say “sod that!”. :-\

I don’t know(personaly) a hardcore gamer that is willing to buy a 3d TV …
I for one would only consider it if there were no glass requirements.

The point isn’t looking stupid … I’m sure when i’m playing I do look stupid :D
But it’s about someone coming over and me not having an extra pair of glasses for them to see a movie, or watch me playing.
And it’s about not being confortable to wear on top of other glasses, or not confortable to wear them if you aren’t used to wear glasses.
other than this … i’m all for 3D it sounds really cool to add depth to games and movies … really cool

It might be a great way forward for 3D:
Launch the PSP with a glasses free 3D screen, give people an inexpensive taste of 3D. Then the next evolution would be a 3D tv.

I enjoy watching the odd 3d Film here and there at the Cinema and I’m normally an early adopter of everything, but i’m really not that bothered about 3D unless its “glasses free”.

Still can’t see 3D taking off, I bet the sales figures are pretty disapointing. Will be interested in how they approach Develop though, im guessing they’ll drop lots of facts n figures.

3D to me seems just a stop-gap before they get the holo-deck technology up and running – which is what we really want, right? ;)

the glasses don’t look that bad when wearing, and after viewing avatar in the cinema and some pc games on my friends 3d monitor i can safely say the current 3d offerings on the market are fucking awesome, especially when done right.
i’m getting one shortly! am i right in thinking that wipeout hd, pain, super stardust hd and motorstorm 2 will all receive updates to play in 3d?

The Sony ones are the best all-rounder in my opinion, i found the nVidia ones tend to flicker at the end of its battery level.
Regarding the games, all of them except MotorStorm have patches. MotorStorm just has a 3D demo, but the next ones out soon
