Lovable, huggable Uncle Bobby Kotick has been voicing his concerns that Activision are missing out on some cash. This time he is rather peeved off that you are paying Microsoft for the pleasure of playing Call Of Duty online and has been talking to the Financial Times regarding the subject.
“We’ve heard that 60 per cent of Microsoft’s subscribers are principally on Live because of Call of Duty,” he said, “We don’t really participate financially in that income stream. We would really like to be able to provide much more value to those millions of players playing on Live, but it’s not our network.”
Roughly translated ‘Microsoft are getting all the cash from COD online, give to me’.
“We have always been platform agnostic,” he continued, rather forgetting those timed DLC exclusives for COD, “Consoles do a very good job of supporting the gamer. If we are going to broaden our audiences, we are going to need to have other devices.”
Two weeks ago Kotick described how he would like to turn COD in to a subscription based game in which you would pay to play online. It appears his sights are very firmly set on squeezing extra cash out of Call Of Duty online.

i think mr kotick is going to be in for a huge shock with both wanting a chunk of live subscription plus a subscription for cod games… maybe mr “big head .. i need more cash” will stop and re think his attitude towards the people that give him all this money (us the gamers) and maybe he will keep his followers. personally this Ba***rd has had way too much of my cash already and wont be getting more…

Honestly, I would only pay for this if they could bundle it with Xbox LIVE for a year, but pretty much still make it 60 bucks a year (here in Canada) So 30 for M$ and then 30 for Activison? Seems fair to me.

I grow weary of Kotick’s claims to want money from everyone…
We want money from him
As his organisation specialises in franchises, meaning the game engine is used & reused multiple times, why aren’t the sequals cheaper than the original games Bobby?
STFU!

ha ha, good point well made. Also the fact is a lot of people have been turned off since the last failure of MW2 (to some) and he probably wont see a huge amount of people going back. Will still be massive as the suckers still love the rubbish they churn out.

Decent point, actually. Since World at War and Modern Warfare 2 only used a tweaked version of the CoD4 engine, why didn’t they just sell people the ‘new’ version of games via downloadable patch for £25?
Same with EA. Why do we pay £40 for FIFA each year, when they could just sell us an engine update patch for £20?
Rhetorical questions, of course. We all know the answers.

Portal 2 and Half Life Episode 3 will use Source again, which is just a shiny version of the quake engine they used for the original Half Life.
The increased profits yielded by this digital recycling are spent by Kotick to maintain the Imperial Fleet and by Gabe Newell on pies.

While he is a massive cock, I quite like the idea of a Call of Duty MMO, I probably wouldn’t play it with FFXIV and Guild Wars 2 coming out, but something like MAG taken to the extreme sounds alright. Although, knowing Activision, they’ll probably just be trying to charge a subscription for the next iteration of Modern Warfare…
I do like the way he talks about supporting PC gaming in the article though.

I hate this guy so much, he does absolutely nothing, and just wants to squeeze money out of everyone he can.

Live won’t let him use a subscription model for COD.
He won’t want to go Playstation exclusive with his biggest franchise, which sells so much units on xbox especially, and there is no way he could get away with charging for online play on some consoles and not others, so I don’t think we’ll see a COD subscription model anytime soon.
Mind you, the amount of sales for DLC could almost be subscription revenue by themselves. €15, every few months could be subscription by stealth, while still giving players more to enjoy.

If you own an xbox you pay to play online any way! Whats the difference?

See the reason Final Fantasy XIV is (at this moment) not coming to 360.
Clue: It’s not the lack of a blu-ray drive.

Kotick is nothing more than a whore. He’ll do/try anything for money.
Hmm, why does calling Kotick a whore make me like I’m insulting prositutes?

I hate this guy. Oh how the gaming world would rub it in his face if the next COD sells only 20 copies.

He is always so full of himself and his company. Granted, they are a huge success, and Call of Duty isn’t a BAD game. But if Activision stopped existing then there’s little I’d miss personally.
