Anyone guilty of writing off the Wii should be ashamed of themselves, it seems the family friendly Mario playing fun machine is still selling well, as this month’s NPD (the sales figures from the States) have revealed.
Still, in terms of raw console sales it’s the Xbox 360 out in front, with 451,000 units shifted. The Wii’s just behind, with 422,000 and the PlayStation 3 in third place, with just over 300,000.
The portables show an even greater divide – the DS with over 500,000 units against the PSP, with just over 120,000.
Sore reading for Sony? Possibly, and software sales haven’t been kind to the PlayStation brand either, with just two entrants in the top 10 – the PS3 version of Red Dead Redemption (in 3rd place, behind Mario Galaxy 2 and the 360 version of Rockstar’s classic) and the PS3 version of UFC 2010 down in 10th, again behind the 360 version.
Here’s the full software sales chart:
The hardware sales for this month put the PS3 at 12,719,000 total units told, the 360 at 20,555,000 units and the Wii way out there with 29,540,000. The DS eclipses everything, with 41,798,000 handhelds shifted.

So the gap in the US just gets wider and wider. I presume July’s may even be wider still with the release of the X360Slim

Why do you think that is? The easy answer that people usually choose is Americans want to buy American (Xbox) but that makes no sense for the DS and Wii. Why do Americans prefer Xbox360 over PS3 so much more than anywhere else in the world?

Why buy Wii? Because it’s pick up and play. Allot of people who buy the Wii will buy it for the family. While some of those same people will buy it for their individual gaming needs =). It’s late in the night, so mu logic is getting hazy…but you understand what I mean right?

They see Sony as a rival to their home-grown console. People buying a Wii are rarely the same people buying a 360. Sure, there are multi-console owners but they’re in the minority.

I am even more disappointed in what people buy in America…. there’s nothing worth playing besides Mario Galaxy 2 which looks brilliant.

Red dead redemption? UFC? Lego Harry potter?
I’m impressed, there’s no generic fps.

I’m not surprised by this, most of the people I know with a PS3 only bought it for blu-ray movies. They’ve never played a game on it other than Buzz, and that’s only because i’ve brought it to their houses.

And yet, most people I know have bought PS3′s for the games and it’s Media hub potential. No doubt the Xslim360 is selling well for the obvious reasons but I do wonder how it sells in Los Angelis, earth quake country, well, the xbox is well known to scratch discs if it gets moved.

Most of the people you know brought a PS3 for the blu-ray???? Are you serious?!?!? Then tell your friends to pick up a blu-ray player for £80 and not to waste their money on a all over powerful machine! All my friends have brought ps3′s in the past coz they’re sick of the RROD! ;p

How many xbox360 owners have been out and replaced their old style 360 for a new one…just due to the fear of the red ring of death with the old 360? I would think the figure would be quite high. I myself replaced my old 60gig ps3 with a new slim just based on the fact that it was beggining to get a bit loud and i was worried about it developing the ylod due to it getting old and lots of launch ps3′s were developing faults…..based on the problem microsoft have had with the rrod, i think that lots of people will replace their old 360. I myself have had 8 360′s go rrod on me and when the last one died back in march, i got it repaired and then sold it. I am now considering one of the new models…..only considering though…will it develop faults? only time will tell.

Wow, that’s a lot of Xbox’s, luckily I’m still on my first 60Gb, regarding the new xbox’s, I think a few will break (but that’s natural with every product) and it then being blown up as the new xbox fail…

Do you guys not think that the Xbox 360 S had something to do with there being such a wide gap between the 360 and PS3? It came out on June 18th in America.

PS3 is the best still. Americans only buy the 360 because they don’t want to buy a Japanese console because they’re arrogant.
Seeing as the Wii doesn’t really have an American competitor, it’ll sell well until Kinect hits and then Americans will lay of the Wii and support Kinect, which is fail like the 360.
