39The end of 2010 is looking either amazing or agonizing for driving game fans, depending on how big your piggy bank is. Of course, the daddy (and mummy, and possibly children) of them all – Gran Turismo 5 – is out in November, so surely all over driving games should head for the hills?
It appears not if World Rally Championship 2010 developer Black Bean’s attitude is anything to go by. Fabio Paglianti and head of physics designer Irvin Zonca had the following to say;
“We are not scared about Gran Turismo. No because our game is completely different to Gran Turismo.
It’s another kind of game. We give the players a completely different experience. It is based on the official license, which has been missing from the market for the last five years for PlayStation users and I don’t remember if there’s been a WRC game on Xbox and never on PC I think so it’s like a new kind of market in this sense.
It’s based on a different type of driving style because with a game like [Gran Turismo 5] you drive faster but like a real car in the road. In rally it’s completely different you have to understand; what is the ground, the grip, the speed? And then you can try and do a handbrake manoeuvre, you can try and do a counter-steering manoeuvre so it’s a completely different way of driving.”
Before everyone jumps up claiming Gran Turismo has rally races, according to Black Bean it’s far from the real deal;
“In Gran Turismo you don’t have the official 2010 cars. They are not updated. For example, Tuscany is not a real location.
If you look at the way the graphics are polished, they’re really beautiful but the fact is that it’s not real because you have this wide circuit covered with dust, it’s a circuit with one type of gravel instead of the tarmac.
If we would have done Tuscany we would have had not a circuit but a starting point and an ending point, with a lot of fans, different terrains, different objects in the circuit. With Gran Turismo there are no trees and stones and bushes in the circuit, it’s like racing on a dirty track so it’s really really different.
A fan of WRC can find, finally, a WRC game for the console and for the PC. For someone who doesn’t know anything about WRC can taste the difference, which is the difference between WRC and all the other kind of games, because it’s a rally game – completely different.”
We think it’s great to have such faith and conviction in your product, but can WRC 2010 really overcome Gran Turismo’s ‘jack of all trade’ approach? We shall see when WRC hits the shelves in October.

ha ha, not scared on GT5..you fucking should be….

As I say below though, GT has never been very good at representing rallying (no proper rally stages, no co-driver pace notes, no damage, no crashes, no service stops) and I can’t see this improving much in GT5.
Rallying is an oily, dirty, mucky sport with bits hanging off cars and outrageous crashes, we all know PD like everything to be shiny and safe.

The only good rallying games I have played have been GT and Colin….with GT being my fave….
Ill never forget seeing that first drift into the sand and watching the RS Escort just dance across the track…
Presssure sensitive Analog Control just made the game even more beautiful in my opinion..
IF PD have capitalised on this which I think they have in spades…. it will be a triumph….
GT5 FTW!!

GT 4 had decent rally, they had snow aswell. My Suzuki pikes peak was epic, also I seem to remember GT does have pit stops, and oil changes, from what I remember the WRC games were awful, they felt like driving cardboard boxes

GT3-A Spec had great rally’ing, far better than GT4 for some strange reason, I think it was the way the game engine handled dust so much better and the slightly less twitchy car handling.

GT has never had decent rallying just driving on dirt tracks. The pit stops and oil changes in GT are rather different to a service stop in a proper rallying game. And with no proper damage engine you cant do rallying I’m afraid.

For rally fans I think it can definately be an alternative, assuming it includes proper visual and mechanical damage, service stops and real stages. Hopefully it will represent the WRC well and help me forget about Dirt2, which I found very disappointing and too ‘American’ in its style (no offence intended, just not for me I’m afraid).

Yup, it is. Have played every GT and CM/WRC game released and can honestly say they couldnt be more different.

I don’t think GT5 can beat a good rally focused game, with their own rally races and stuff. But I don’t think WRC won’t just attract gamers that like rally games, but gamers that like realistic racing games. And on that front.. GT5 will eat em all.

the thing is, if the physics are that good on GT5, it will do ANY type of racing on four wheels. They will just set the car and track up, the rest will take care of its self. the only thing letting it down would be all the ‘extras’ you get with a dedicated rally/f1/toca race game, like branding, commentators and drivers ect. but the actual racing will be hard to beat as it sounds like GT5 is spot on with driving physics.

I always found the gravity a bit off on GT games. Jumps seem to launch you for a long time and landings are not hard enough. I think a lot of that is the lack of damage so maybe GT5 will be better but this is certainly why the rally racing seemed to lack something compared to dedicated rally games

I think GT5 will win, because only hardcore WRC fans will get the WRC game over GT5. GT5 offers so much more, so I reckon people will go with that.

erm… what about all the colin mcrae games?

Last one didn’t represent rallying at all TBH, Codemasters seem to be going the “Extreme Sports” route.

oh yeh, ive just checked and the last real colin mcrae game was back in 2005 and black bean said there hasn’t been a ‘proper’ WRC game in 5 years.

I’m up for a decent rally game just as long as it doesn’t turn out like Richard Burns Rally.

Best rally game ever made due to realistic physics. Made Colin Mcrae look like Bumper Cars in comparison.

I thought Richard Burns Rally was a better rally game than the Mcrae game that was out at the time. It did take a lot of practise to get descent times.

He is right about GT rally stages just being a dirty track. There are never obstacles like big rocks or fallen trees and no ditches fall into. That said, I always see GT as a jack of all trades AND a master of one, simulation racetrack driving.
It doesn’t do ‘proper’ rally but it’s nice to have something as a bit of a change. If what I really wanted was a rally game, then I’d still be looking elsewhere for a full WRC game.

Am I the only one that is looking forward to the new NFS more than GT5, there both brilliant games but Burnout *drewl* my favourite game since I started playing games is awesome. I would put it like this Burnout>GT5>NFS (existing ones) but now Burnout makers are making NFS, it goes like this, Burnout=New NFS>GT5. This would be the part where I run away….

I don’t consider them in the same genre. Burnout is the absolute king of arcade racers, NFS being the prince, while GT5 is the undeniable ruler of simulation.
Neither would stop me wanting the other

I’ve not played a rally game since V -Rally on the PS1 drove me insane.
Bananas.
