New WWE Franchise Coming

"Less simmy" than Smackdown! Vs Raw.

CVG has revealed that THQ is prepping a brand new WWE gaming franchise for next next year.  This will bring the total number of WWE brands up to four – with Smackdown! Vs Raw, WWE All Stars and the Asia only Smackdown! Vs Raw Online already out in the wild.

THQ core games boss Danny Bilson had the following to say;

“[Smackdown! Vs Raw Online] is for Asia.  I don’t think there’s any chance of that coming to the US or Europe, not soon anyway. We don’t want to confuse Smackdown Vs. Raw! [the brand] with that online free-to-play game.

That’s a big, expensive title, Smackdown Vs. Raw! – we will not do any cannibalisation of it at all. The online game is also designed uniquely for Asian playing habits and it would probably have to be modified creatively to bring it to the West.

So there’s no plan to bring it here – because what we do have a plan for on that brand is what you saw with All Stars. And next year you’ll see another new extension there in another way – that’s just as exciting as All Stars, but a little different. We’re not talking about that yet.

We’re growing that brand basically through an alternate SKU every six months – the other SKUs [All-Stars and the unannounced game] are more friendly, easier and less simmy than Smackdown! Vs Raw.”

I’ll hold my hands up; I’ve not enjoyed a wrestling game since ‘No Mercy’ and ‘Wrestlemania 2000′ on the Nintendo 64.  I felt that every new game after that added more content, but lost a bit of the fun factor.  It will be interesting to see how this new franchise pans out.

  1. Good, the added realism this gen is bringing means that fun becomes a secondary factor in a game’s design… hope more devs & pubs focus on the fun factor and it doesn’t just become the domain of the downloadable arena

    • Well I love the idea that they’ve got the sim franchise in Smackdown vs Raw, and All-Stars is a more fun franchise. This sounds like the third franchise will be between.

The split is like having FIFA and FIFA Street. More franchises should do this.

    • You could say SvR is very realistic but I would disagree. It is far too slow and limited to recreate what you see on TV.
I agree with you on the fun factor though, many games have lost it. FIFA 10 is a brilliant game but annoys the hell out of me and WWE has become pretty boring over the years. Hopefully All Stars will bring some fun back.

      • No, SvR isn’t all that realistic, but it’s trying to be realistic.

  2. feature creep caused by one game a year has killed that franchise for me, and i used to enjoy the games, i dread to think what the series will end up like with three different versions.
i mean really, do they need three wwe games?

    • I think it is a good idea. Smackdown vs. Raw is a slow “sim” game which will appeal to the fans that want some level of realism while the arcade All Stars will appeal to those who want a fun fighting game.

  3. I don’t care about a new SvR game THQ. Just fix the horrendous lag in SvR 2010 first and I’ll be very happy. Most of the glitches, if not all, were fixed in SvR 2010 and as I thought that this was the perfect SvR game, I went online only to find lag, even in a one-on-one match. Everyone else soon discovered this lag and there was no such thing as a lag free online match in SvR 2010. I’ve not played it since December because of this lag. Shame really. Hopefully they keep the glitches under control AND fix the lag in SvR 2011. You know, its funny, I actually heard a joke about what the patch for the lag in SvR 2010 would be called, it was called “SvR 2011″, lol. Ironicaly, it seems like that is the case.

    • Lag was horrible. They’re also updating the physics heavily so you can launch someone through a table without having to set it up. Looks great.

      • I can imagine the horrible amount of glitches that will come along with that new physics engine though :/ Every new feature they release, it comes with a bunch of problems.

  4. WWE… realism …
does that mean you have to pretend to be hit?!

    • You also have to pretend to fall off a 15 foot ladder through 4 tables too. Because that’s really fake.
