Once again Blizzard have been teasing the console market with the possibility of returning to develop games for PS3 and Xbox 360. In a statement to MCV, Blizzard Entertainment’s VP Michael Ryder harks back to the early ’90s when the company was cutting its teeth on console games like Rock’n'Roll Racing and The Death and Return of Superman.
Ryder says to MCV UK;
In the early years Blizzard made console games. It’s not the heritage, it’s the design decisions and what we think is best for our players… We play console games and we are up-to-speed on the console platforms. And if we see an opportunity where the game design would work well on the console, then maybe we will go that way. We just haven’t announced anything yet.
Given Xbox Live’s incompatibility with the MMO format, it seems unlikely we’ll see a WoW clone coming to the 360 at least. But Blizzard could be keeping an eye on Final Fantasy XIV’s performance on PS3 before making any formal announcement.
What do you think? Are Blizzard letting Square Enix test the console MMO waters, or could they be thinking about a return to their traditional action based console game?
