Slim PS3 Gets More USB Ports, Card Reader Add-on

It's like a bodykit, for your PS3.

You know the situation, you’ve got a new Slim PS3 and you’ve simply got too many things to hook to it’s paltry double USB port limit, right?  If it’s not PlayTV needing a slot, it’s the Guitar Hero plectrum, or a Dual Shock that needs charging.  Panic not, Datel have the answer with this Fast and Furious-style front bumper add-on for your PS3.

For 2,000 Yen, the device plugs into the right-most USB port giving you another 3 extra sockets (so 4 in total) plus plenty of memory-card related goodness, including an SD cart slot that’s sadly missing on most models after the launch console.  The ports aren’t powered, although you can connect (judging from my translation) an external power supply to give them more juice.

The image above shows the absolute most you’ll have shoved into your PS3 at any one time, exaggerations aside, the new device does appear to have some merit.

  1. I’m waiting for this bad boy… http://www.twistdock.info/

    • Nicccccccccccccccccccccce

  2. Looks like it covers the WLAN and HDD indicators then. Guess that doesn’t matter so much though.

What’s the peripheral on top of the PS3? The one with the green line.

    • P.S. Nice watermark too ;-)

  3. All the previous pasts are a good reason I could never trade in my 60GB phatty.

  4. There’s also this one:
    http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2010/01/13/nyko-media-hub-slim/

Turns two ports into four and gives you an SD card reader (and a remote you may never use).

Amazon.co.uk list it as releasing next week for £17.99:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nyko-Slim-Media-Hub-PS3/dp/B0038KORSA

  5. As stated above, if the hub isn’t mins powered, at best you may be able to connect a PSEye and a Dual Shock 3 charger, but if anything else needs charging, or you want to use a memory stick at the same time, forget it.

I got myself this from Maplin – wasn’t cheap at £24.99, but with it having two front USBs and 5 rear it really helps keep the cables out of the way. The only thing is that with it being white, it sticks out like a sore thumb!

So now, one of my PS3 ports is for PlayTV, and the other connects to this. I end up with my headset charger, dual shock charger and PS Eye cables all hidden around the back, and still end up with two spare at the front for a memory stick, singstar, buzz etc.

  6. Strange timing – I had to get a new slim last week as my launch day 60gb died, and I ordered this from Amazon for £11.99 this morning! http://www.amazon.co.uk/PS3-Slim-Hub-Stand/dp/B003JH7BVC/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=IXTVZA4A3TJM1&colid=3HL2DGCJ96ASK

  7. I need more USB Ports, what I don’t need is to see more wires, cards, dongles and other doo-dah’s sticking out the FRONT of my sleek black box.

  8. mmm, my 40gb (320 hhd inside though) phat would like this muchly too

  9. This is turning out to be a very useful thread with some links to some good USB hub options for the PS3. :)

I may be getting a slim in the next couple of weeks if my 60gb phat is unable to be repaired, so I will be in need of a solution for adding additional USB ports.
