Now that Gran Turismo 5 actually has a proper release date, and therefore it’s fine to start getting quite excited about it, we’ve got a video today that appears to show an online spectator mode for the much anticipated racer.
The video below has surfaced over the weekend, and is actually a short clip from some footage of the GT Academy national finals, posted in February but overlooked until GTPlanet’s CoolColJ rediscovered and uploaded it. It shows a mode very similar to watching a post-race replay, except live and over the network.
Obviously it’s been a fair while since the Academy, and the feature could have been dropped long ago, but with any luck it will be making it into the final version of the game. There are no details as to whether just friends can spectate, or if there is some kind of central hub in GT5 to watch ongoing races, but we’ve still got Gamescom and the Tokyo Game Show before the game’s release so we may well hear about this spectator mode then.

I thought this had been confirmed?

I believe it was confirmed before the leak of kart racing.
It’s nice to know these new writers actually read the news on TSA :).

I must’ve missed that, sorry. I’m not a massive GT person, so it likely slipped past me.

I’ll let you off this time, but only because we didn’t have a video of it before :D.

I had a look around TSA, and a quick Google, and that was what I saw too – kart racing was confirmed, but we didn’t have anything official on this. Plus the video is new anyway ;)

So, people are going to just watch other people race rather than play themselves? Is it just me or does this seem like a ridiculous feature?

Not to me. I took LittleBigPlanet over to a friends and watched four of them play for two hours. It was hilarious. Also, with GT5, I’m hoping you can connect with voice so I get to shout “SCREEEEEECCCHHH!!!” to replace the dreadful tire sound they still use.

I can completely understand watching people gaming when you’re in the same room – I’ve watched friends play LBP too while not playing myself and it is funny. But sitting by yourself watching digital cars race around? I don’t get it.

Do you watch the Grand Prix on TV at home?

^ lol, but seriously, as if you have that little to do in life that you would sit there are watch strangers race on a computer game? whack on an episode of top gear or something for gods sake!!

I don’t watch it, but even if I did the Grand Prix is real and I can understand people enjoying the sport and getting behind their favourite racer, the sense of occasion, etc. I don’t think people will get the same from ‘spectating’ this.

I’ve sat and watched plenty of lap replays on GTHD/GTTT/GT5p to improve my lines. I would imagine this will provide a similar thing, watch a race with a guy who’s quick and learn his techniques.
Might not be much for the casual sim-racer, but I would hazard a guess there are some out there who will find this feature atleast quite useful.

Fair play, I can understand that. Tbh I’ll be one of the very casual players who will get the game because of the hype and the fact that everyone else has it. Although saying that I really should get Red Dead to…

@Blayney finally someone speaks sence
also it might be good for uploading vids to utube or for doing tournaments

I’m waiting to hear more about that, as there was initially mention of youtube connectivity, to upload replays straight to your account. I would *love* this feature, but haven’t seen much mention of it.

@ Blayney well as long as you can save footage onto your hdd you can use the utube uploader on the PS3

It’ll be handy for tournament type events, say if TSA ran a tournament even those not racing could watch the event.

That would be pretty cool actually!

Yeah, some TSA tournaments would be great. I’m sure they’ll be plenty of TSA Meets set up as well !!! ;)

Not if there was some kind of organised tournament or competition where the best GT racers in the world were competing for a huge prize – in that case it would be no more ridiculous than watching racing on TV.
Or if you wanted to race with someone in your friends list but they were just finishing off another race first you could sit and watch the end of their race to see how they were doing before they race with you…

What would make sense is if you join a room and a race is already in progress, you can actually watch the race while you wait. Far too few on-line racing games do this, so you wind up just sitting there twiddling your thumbs watching a progress bar (or not even that in some games) until everyone finishes.

Great idea
Most people just wait in the lobby, and then quit a couple of mins, so lobbies never fill up, but if they could watch the race they’ll be more likely to wait in the lobby – thus there will be more full lobbies

Watching anything to do with GT5 now (after seeing it at BETA) seems dull to be honest.

It’s not complaining. It’s voicing an opinion.

This is excellent news to me, I’ll be the first to admit I’m not great at the game but I will always pay attention to anything which could possibly improve my performances on it and I can definitely see myself making use of this addition.
I can see how in prospect this seems like a rather silly feature and I, myself would be rather critical had I not already used up a fair amount of time watching hot laps on the Gran Turismo HD demo.

Ah, fair enough. I thought maybe they had some Massa/Alonso team orders going on, where the outcome of the race had already been determined.

Three players battling it out with no cheating.
If only that was true for all online races.

4, there’s a yellow 350z a bit further back than the other three.

Yeah, but he/she wasn’t fighting for the lead like the other three.

Ah cool, I didn’t spot that! I have a yellow 350z in real life! :D
