It’s looking likely that with enough skill, LittleBigPlanet 2 users will be able to create split-screen games for up to four players – and it’s all down to ‘divergent cameras.’
During Play Magazine’s exclusive studio visit to Media Molecule, technical director Alex Evans and creative director Mark Healey had the following to say;
“Now playing online – and this may sound rather techy and boring – you can have divergent cameras.
This means people playing on different machines can be looking at different parts of the world.”
It’s already been proven that First Person Shooter style games can be created in LittleBigPlanet 2, as one creator has already made a Space Harrier type game using the tools, and possibly some sort of black magic. Applying these divergent cameras could essentially turn whatever you have created into a split screen multiplayer.
Update: It has been pointed out, by Media Molecule, that this is not technically split screen. Rather, online players will each be able to have their own camera and thus their own viewpoint. Still technically impressive but not all on the one screen. Thanks for the heads up MM! [PC]

Well it’s not splitscreen multiplayer is it? They mean online, as in separate players can go to separate areas and such.

if the Divergent Cameras are in existence, then in theory it would be very possible to have proper split screen on a single PS3 too.

But split-screen isn’t mentioned anywhere. That assumption shouldn’t be made.

True, and MM have said on twitter, just a second ago, that it’s not local split screen, just online.
It was NowGamer that ran it wrong first, mind you…

That’s what I got from it as well. I think they’ve hinted at that before, but it was for competitive multiplayer. I would assume now you can now use the same method for cooperative play too. Now if they could just increase the maximum number of players in a level to maybe six or eight.

Finally!! Having the camera randomly pick the wrong guy every once in a while is a right pain when you’re doing a tricky level. Not to mention that it makes all the careful camera work and pin point jumps a lot harder to do if you’re not the centre of attention.
Great job MM. :)

So basically with enough skill and dedication… little big planet can remake all the classics of our child (or adult) – hood per-se =]

“Now playing online…”
“This means people playing on different machines…”

Slightly misleading wording in this article – the screen is not being split, it’s just allowing for players to have their own screen during a level online. Seeing as I only ever play create mode when I’m online anyway, I’m pretty used to it

Ignoring the misleading title of split-screen, that is just incredible. So that with two people playing the game online (on separate consoles) they can play cooperatively and work on different sections/segments. This could be something special.

For the record: the “misleading title” wasn’t originally ours, it was NowGamer’s. We just went with their story on face value before fully analysing the actual quotes. We’ll know not to be so trusting in future :)
Media Molecule have since told us it’s not actually split screen and we’ve amended our story accordingly.

Title still mentions split screen though. Fix it!

We leave the original story as it was to avoid looking like we’re not owning up to the responsibility of the mistake.
The story has been updated to reflect the clarification we’ve recieved but changing the original story would be like trying to erase history. So, no.

Hahaha! I’m assuming Media Molecule are going ahead with Raoul Moat Sackboy and Rothbury level kit too.

I wouldn’t be surprised. The original LBP really did affect kids, what with the heavy-duty happy-slapping involved. Media Molecule is corrupting our kids!
