Suddenly the H.A.W.X franchise doesn’t have the skies to itself anymore, as Namco Bandai has announced that Ace Combat Assault Horizon will be released on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 next year.

This is the first console outing for almost three years, and Namco Bandai has confirmed single-player and online multiplayer options for Assault Horizon, but not much else.  The teaser trailer throws around phrases like ’rebirth’ and ‘This one’s a game changer’ – plus helicopter gun fights, turret gunning and downtown dogfights.  So far so good, although we hope the QTEs are kept to a minimum.

  2. Has it ever had playable helicopters before? That could be fun.

  3. Interesting. Ace Combat got very stale over the last couple of iterations so the new events and game-play styles should hopefully give the franchise a kick up the backside.

  4. what interests me most is it shows you having to eject and parachute down. what happens when you reach the ground? grand theft heleicopter?

  5. Ooh, that looks pretty good.. Would be nice to see helis in there too, just the other day I was reminiscing about the old C64 game, Gunship and how cool it would be if something like that was around today. Granted, this isn’t it, but it still looks cool.

  6. Cheers for the article, Dan. :-)

I never really embraced Ace Combat but loved that it existed. However, Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies (PS2) was great fun. I can’t be bothered with all the anal retention of flight simulators but something light and frothy is perfect. Assault Horizon trailer looks to be an equal blinder. I’m not sure I even need to read about it or see any more footage. The fact that I know it’s coming is enough for me. Not like they were the deepest of games and never pretended to be.

Yay for dogfights in between skyscrapers!

  8. Those QTE’s look F**k**g increidible! 101% more immersive than any other flight game I’ve seen. I hope they stay in and do them just as well, the cinematics were superb! I know its not the traditional game play style we’re accustomed to, but what would you rather? Play H.A.W.X or watch Top Gun!? Exactly! I think its quite a bold move for Ace Combat but could be a genius one if they’re done to the standards of that trailer.
Based on this, first day purchase for me!

  9. Wow, if that’s how the game plays on release I’ll be picking it up.

  10. Disappointing to see this takes place in the real world, instead of the world the other games take place in.

By the looks of the trailer, the story is generic Americans good, Russians evil.
