Call of Duty: Black Ops developer – Treyarch – has warned gamers of a new scam that involves impostors stealing gamertags from the new Call of Duty: Black Ops trailer, and posing as members of the development team over Xbox Live. Apparently, some people have been contacted by ‘DJVahn’ over Live – which is one of the gamertags featured in the trailer.
The real David ‘Vahn’ Vonderhaar from Treyarch had the following to say;
“When you are in development of the game, you are not using Xbox Live. You are using the development version of it. Think of it like a copy of the Xbox Live that only developers use. It’s called Partnernet. On Partnernet, we can make up as many gamertags as we want, as long as they are not taken.
That’s why you see WayneNoobton, DJVahn, and others in the video. If you get contacted by any of these people, it’s not us. We’ve contacted our account rep at Microsoft and he is looking into it. Thanks.”
There has been no further information as to what the scam actually involves. Remember; stranger=danger!

lol @ stranger=danger. made me think of the wonderful http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AVQJ_3A5rA
The rest of the story doesn’t really interest me. IMO If you’re stupid enough to give up personal details or whatnot because someone says they’re from a dev-team and has zero proof other than a username, you deserve to get a virtual spanking, so to speak.

Methinks a system like that employed by the TV industry is required. If you see a telephone number on a fictional TV show, say you see a character dialling a number or a number flashes up on their call ID it’s not a number in service but comes from a list of reserved numbers which are not to be issued to the general public.

never really thought of a separate LIVE or PSN for dev’s, i wonder if it runs better than the consumer version, hence so many online bugs in todays games at launch

Good point, but I would have thought that it was on the devs own dedicated servers and on a closed in house network.

The bugs with connections are from demand and no betas. The bugs in gameplay are from devs not really trying to break shit.
