Review: Fable III 63

Lionhead Senior design director – Josh Atkins - has been discussing the new combat features set to appear in Fable III – with the interesting news that players can use maximum power spells from the start;

“Much like every other section of the game, the spell casting system has had a complete overhaul.  From the moment the player receives their first spell, they are able to cast the maximum spell level, albeit very very slowly.

As the hero levels up their spell ability, they will find that progressive spell levels will cast much more quickly, meaning that at maximum spell ability level, the highest level of the spell will almost insta-cast. This means magic for all levels is much less about standing about waiting to charge up to useful levels and is more immediate and fun.”

Fable III will also have a feature called ’Spellweaving’, which allows the player to equip two different spell gauntlets at once, creating some interesting and powerful combinations;

“For example, if the player chooses Vortex on one hand and Fireball on the other then they will cast a Fire Vortex which sucks people off the ground and sets them on fire, especially good against those annoying Hobbes!   There are over 20 spell combinations to experiment with.”

“Morphing” weapons also play a big part in Fable III.  These weapons will change to reflect the character’s playing style;

“Initially, all weapons look very standard, but as the hero powers up, the weapons morph to reflect the hero’s playing style.  Some weapons have predetermined paths and missions the player has to perform to give them amazing new abilities while others morph to reflect exactly what the hero has done in the game.

When you are playing co-op these morphing weapons take on a new meaning as some weapons can only upgrade if you are willing to do a nice thing and gift them to another player.”

Some interesting features – and having seen a video of the spellweaving in action, I must say it looks as cool as it sounds.

  1. The weapon morphing sounds quite intriguing. I hope Fable 3 delivers though as the last 2 didn’t quite live up to the expectations before release.

  2. cannot wait for this one, fable 2 is still one of my favourite 360 titles.
    there was only one problem with fable 2, when i levelled up the strength attribute my character would get bloody huge, so i tended to not level it up.
    if i could level it up but not get huge that would be better.

    • I hated how butch the girls looked on this game if you started to make her stronger.
