Id Software’s amazing looking title – RAGE – has been given a release date, but don’t get excited just yet! The game is due out on September 13th and 15th 2011, in the US and Europe respectively. Described as an “open but directed” game, this FPS will have side missions to tempt you away from the main story, but it’s not quite an open world.
Your character emerges into a post-apocalyptic society after an asteroid has destroyed most of civilisation. A sinister force called ‘The Authority’ is after survivors – and that includes you!
Bring it on!

i think its the first type of game like it. love the style of films. infact as i type watching The Crazie. it would be bloody cool to play a game mixed between CODs nazi zombies and Far Cry!!!

Killzone 3
Crysis 2
Resistance 3 [poss]
Call of Duty Black Ops
These are 4 good reasons for them to take their time if they want to deliver a polished, original and enthralling game…

Not quite an open world? No free roam?

that has possibly to with the XBOX version needing 2 or 3 DVD’s. If they want to avoid having to constantly swap, then they split the game into several different areas that don’t need to be accessed irregularly for the main story i suppose.

There are ways beyond that though….
With the Final Fantasy games PSOne en PS2 they had multiple disc and as the story progressed you had to swap the discs, but you never had to put in a previous disc, even though you backtracked to previous areas, so I don’t really think multiple discs is the reason for “directed open world”…

For Final Fantasy it was the videos that needed all that space on the disks. For Rage it was already confirmed that the world itself doesn’t fit on one DVD. Something that doesn’t make ID happy, because Microsoft charges per DVD.

Okay, that changes the story slightly, still you could go with mandatory installs for Xbox though, but still, it would be better for the development of the gameindustry (and bluray) if MS would put a bluray in their machine…

Don’t sony own the rights to blueray though? I’m not sure they’d let microsoft use it if they do.

you can’t force a mandatory install on XBOX users, because that would leave out all the Arcade Models, and i am certain Microsoft requires games to be playable on all XBOX models.

ID also announced that this would also be a Blu-Ray only PC release, and they’ve never really been big into ingame movies these guys.
Going some time back reading Carmacks blog this is their first console venture with the ps3,i believe(although not 100% sure)the 360 version will be a traditional 3rd party conversion so may have workarounds to reduce the disk amount(i’m not trying to do down the 360 here as ID will still have quality control over all formats).
