Gran Turismo 5 Karting Footage

We’ve known karting would feature in Gran Turismo 5 for some time now. Whether or not you think the addition is a bit batty, you have to admit that it’s at least admirable how Polyphony are apparently trying to cover every known form of racing ever created in an effort to be the biggest racing game in the universe.

Hell – something has to justify that protracted development time. Check out the footage below. ModNation Racers this ain’t.

  1. Is it wrong that I want to take a go-kart round the Nurburgring?

    • I hope there’s a trophy for that… Would be immense.

      • Imagine doing that in real life.

      • looks loads of fun. Graphics are pretty sick as always!

GT5 – it only does everything!!

      • Imagine the pitstops every mile to re-fuel…

      • It’ll be the least thrilling pit-stop ever.

      • @PETE_UK, think about the tesla would that make it full throttle around there? If not 8 hours charging, longest lap ever.

      • BMW done the first EV lap with the E-Mini. But they had to keep it in a refrigerated truck the night before, so that it wouldn’t overheat doing a full lap.

      • @BIGAL-1992

google/youtube for REMI KART (REMI GAILLARD) he does it in Paris in a Mario kart ;)

for this footage: very nice me like!

      • it showed the kart going 100 mph or was that kmh

      • Go-karting on the Nurburgring is officially going on my bucket list. I assume it was 100km/h if the footage is from Japan.

    • That is the first thing I thought :D

  2. Question, is it fun though?

    • if you enjoy and want a real racing sim and you have a good wheel set up, then yes, it will be the most fun you’ll have all gaming year. If you love games like NFS or dirt, then i would advice you to stay well clear of GT5! Its not an over the top arcade racer, its about precision and accuracy. like real racing id guess. rent it 1st if your unsure IMO. as for me, I cant wait! im getting a G25 wheel and GT5 ASAP :-) Karting looks fun too

      • on the market for a wheel
        but so many out the
        is the G25 the latest
not too bothered about latest or not just want value4money

      • Dont think thats fair to be honest. I agree having a decent wheel does at to a game but the worry for me with GT5 is will it have any soul?

Without decent AI and damage it could get stale fairly quickly, just like Prologue.

      • Don’t forget that the G27 wheel is out as well. It has L.E.D shift lights on the steering wheel.

    • Yeah it depends in what car you buy and how you race, earning cash can be quite addictive like buying the Zonda LM racecar wow….

  3. Love it!

  4. Wow, look at the way the hands move on the steering wheel. very impressive

  5. He’s driving it all wrong. I’ve gone on karts for years and he’s making a mess out of it.

    • I always think that when you see GT videos. Clearly the skills needed to develop the game do not require being a great driver, lol

    • I suppose it’s a lot harder to steer anything without feeling the weight of it. You won’t feel with the thing you’re driving is doing exactly.

      • You won’t feel what* the thing you’re driving is doing exactly.

    • I think we could tell from the fact he was losing control every 5 seconds.

  6. I thought this would add an arcade-y like appeal to GT. Looks like I was wrong.

    • I’ve gone on actual karts before-they handle far better than in this.

      • How can you comment on how they handle from watching a video? I can understand comments that it looks a bit clinical but handling is about the way it feels!

      • Jep, with real carts you would jump just before the corner to get the best out of your drift. No jumping in this video = wrong handling. Obviously.

      • Also, why bother driving a kart if there are no boost/weapon pads on the track?

    • I’m sorry, I know I’ve not been here very long, but do you have anything positive to say?

      • Me or cc?

      • Yup
        http://www.thesixthaxis.com/author/cc_star/

Although I’ll sugar-coat everything for you if you prefer

      • Yeah every comment ive seen of CC has been negative

      • Perhaps you only notice stuff you disagree with?

Using the backend to the site I’ve just checked and I’ve made about 10 or so comments today and this is the only negative comment to the subject matter.

I usually comment more, but today, more than any other we seem to have been invaded by fanboys so I’ve been editing and deleting comments.

But what do you want me to say – it looks a sterile pile of poo. I had great hopes that go-karts would add a bit of fun to the franchise which focuses on the serious technical side to racing, so I comments as such and for some reason I have to justify the way I feel, simply because you disagree with how I feel o_O

    • Agree BIGAL-1992,

The thing about Karting is the sense of exhilaration you get from being 1″ off the ground but getting some incredible speeds.

This is something the GT franchise struggles with, for all its technical expertise it just doesn’t give you the thrill that you’d feel in real life if you were doing 200mph in a supercar. and its something a lot of other racers give you.

This is why I thought the addition of karting would help out, but it looks like its got that ‘almost sterile’ feel to it that has existed throughout the rest of the title

      • The visuals of GT run exactly how it feels to drive around a track, but a TV cannot portray the feel of driving. When you are speeding around a track, the view out the windshield is identical to the view on the GT, but your peripheral vision, the wheel feed back, and car rock/sway gives you that feel speed. Arcade games use blurring and other visual effects to imply speed, but GT simulates what it can…in our case the front windshield. If they hocked up extra TV’s to the left and right of the main set, and then added a race seat on pistons to mimick the cars rock/sway and road bumps, and 3D glasses it would be spot on, just not practical in the living room.lol

      • Need more than 3D glasses. ;), after playing this at the beta rooms, in both 3D and 2D, I think I might only use 3D for certain parts, as this game looks so good in 1080p, it’s a shame to use 720p (albeit in 3D). But it might have been the way they had the TV’s set up, I shall see come November.

      • But cc youve just explained your own query. Its GT5, not Mario Kart. Of course its gonna be in the same style as the rest of the game otherwise it wouldnt be in the same game. Its like saying COD is too twitchy and fast so they need to include a heavy more realistic shooter online.

I’m not having a dig but I dont quite get what your trying to say.

      • cc, I think it’s quite clear you’re not a fan of sims, but more arcade racers. I’m quite the opposite. Burnout tends to bore me to death, but this kart footage makes me throb like a teenager. Each to their own, you don’t have to buy it.

      • I don’t think anybody in their right minds would expect it to be anything other than sim karting and not mario karting @rob92, however I did think in all the games supposed realism they’d have captured the excitement of racing 1″ off the ground.

As dj-katy says on the following page its like they’ve re-skinned a low spec car. No lift, no spins, no speed, and a completely uninspired track – looks totally sterile., or amphlett said Talking of sterile, did anyone spot the number of position changes for the AI drivers, excluding the odd bump, zero. or buniomike’s comment about The lack of acceleration, grip, camera movement in first person, etc, makes it all look like it’s being done on ice. (and the way he’s constantly snaking on the straights it certainly does look like karting on ice, that would never happen to a bad driver in a real kart, so why would it happen in a sim.

To me this looks a return to the impenetrable bubble cars of the past, hell even the drivers look bored shitless.

And @andytorr Don’t worry my money is safe, however I will think twice about expressing disappointment is a short sentence in future, and will either not bother or write an essay of justification for my throwaway comment in advance. ;)

  7. gonna be fun online, how about a karting only TSA meet?

  8. BIGAL – congrats on being on karts for years, however by looking at one video fram GT how can you say thats how they handle.

Most videos of GT you see are from people who cant use steering wheels and continually crash into walls.

Wait until you play it to pass judgement on the handling.

    • Any chance we could start a new meme? Something like “[username/publisher/developer/Peter Molyneux] has been on karts for years.”

I have no idea what it could mean, but I think it sounds great.

      • Or at least set a subtitle on BIGAL’s profile :)

      • I think that’s nofi’s department.

    • The person that was driving was driving it like a normal racing car. On a kart, you NEVER do that. Hell, you have to act as if you’re in a car similar to F1 cars. I just don’t know if this is going to be a good idea as it stands.

      • I have driven karts before and drive a normal car so I can tell the difference, my point is in all these videos of GT5, the people racing are hardly pros at it, so you can’t pass judgement on the handling of a game without trying it for yourself.

      • I don’t know about you, but the sense of speed looks totally wrong, and therefore the handling looks wrong at those speeds. It also looks just like their boring races, karting is like CQC, so much going on at once – and constantly harassing each other – not like this steril racing line crap.

  9. I understand why they ditched the Blue Shell, but why get rid of the Bananas?

    • Judging by how often the car spins, the bananas are still there. They are just invisible to make them more dangerous.

    • Guessing the Princess outfit will be premium DLC after launch

    • Followed by the magic-mushroom hat wearing bloke.

  10. This looks _NOTHING_ like real karting. This looks slower than the customer karts we have at the place I work. For one the kart is very tail happy at a very slow speed? Also the racing looks amazingly stale when karting in reality is massive chaos. With racing karts at least, very unimpressive if you ask me…

    • Also whoever heard of 8 driver race? Madness..
