Speaking to the UK’s Official PlayStation Magazine (via publishing stablemate CVG) Sony Worldwide Studios boss for Europe Michael Denny denied that the company measured its success purely against that the sales of the Xbox 360 and the Wii.

“There are a whole number of metrics we could measure success by,” he said, “but for me on a worldwide studios side of things, there’s nothing more gratifying than when we break new IPs – innovative games we bring to PlayStation fans.”

“In a year like the one just gone, you look at a game like Heavy Rain,” Denny continued. “A lot of people questioned whether that was risky and whether it [could] stand up. But I think that’s what really brings the pleasure of working for Sony first party – we’re willing to take some risks and look at innovation.”

Heavy Rain was, presumably, a considerable gamble for Sony’s first party portfolio, but for most gamers it represented something no other console could offer, and you can’t deny it was innovative.

“I think that what that game’s delivered is fantastic,” concluded Denny, “it’s not only new IP, but I think it’s created a new genre. [It's had] not only great critical acclaim, but great commercial success as well.”

  1. Risks is in the DNA of Sony.

Sony as group has long history of taking big risks. It is one of the reasions why they are such a big business. Sony dosn’t care if they spend a few million on R&D and nothing comes from it. But once in while it works that few million on R&D turns big.

Just look at Playstation 1. They where agenst the almighty Nindendo and Sega. It look like they where going to lose big time. They brought few studios up just to make shore there where few games for system. The one stands in my mind is Psygnosis (SCE Studio Liverpool) they made some visually best games on the Amiga.

PS Psygnosis did made some err rubbish games as well on Amiga like Microcosm.

    • By the same notion, MS took a big risk too (going up against Sony and Nintendo). ;-)

  2. I think almost all of my favourite ps3 games are new IPs. I’ve generally been disappointed buy the established franchises this generation (Res Evil, MGS, GOW etc..).

One of the main reasons I picked the PS3 over the 360 is due to the variety of games and the number of new IP Sony release. Third part exclusives come and go but the first party ones are the bread and butter for the system.

Uncharted, Modnation Racers, Heavy Rain, inFamous and motorstorm have all spent significant time in my ps3. I can’t really say that about any other games this gen that aren’t new IP apart from Fifa.
