With the Kinect beta up and running for some lucky few, it was only a matter of time before pics of the hardware in actual living spaces made it onto the interweb. Kotaku has posted a whole host of images, from a smiley face instruction placard to what the device looks like plonked in front of a Samsung TV.
There’s no real surprise here. After all, we’ve known what the camera looks like in principle for sometime; namely a dark, legless Wall-E. But what has got tongues wagging is just how large the camera seems; something we’re only now able to fully perceive when the device is viewed up close and in context with a normal gaming set up.
The post on Kotaku also mentions how early users are reporting “mixed” results with Microsoft’s new motion controller tech. Focusing on the good news, however, bundled with Kinect Sports and Kinect Joyride, beta testers are reporting that, though there is some lag in the games, it’s not that noticeable. Voice commands have also been reported as to be working as expected.
We’re guessing “Kinect! Down in front!” is a popular call. Suddenly those reports suggesting oodles of space is required to fully experience Microsoft’s next big thing are starting to make sense. It’s nothing to do with detection – the camera takes up half the room*. Check the link for more images of the shiny, ever-watchful behemoth.
*We’re kidding, of course. It does look somewhat bigger than we expected, however.

Maybe it is big to make buyers feel that they are getting more value for money?

I must say it is much thicker than I was expecting, added to that the clearance needed for the motorised based to work it might not even fit on some wall mounted TV’s, and it definitely won’t fit on newer LED TV’s.
I wonder if a mounting bracket will be made available like you can get for the PS Eye to lock it to the top or bottom of your TV?
Eitherway it’s size is the least of it’s problems…

I don’t know about wall mounting it, it wouldn’t even fit under my screen the bottom of the screen is literally 3 inches from the Stand it’s on, and by the looks, that THING is more than 3 inches

I cant remember the which company, but someone is making a whole line of accessories for it, from wall mounts to floor stands.
Thank fully my PS Eye is fastened to the top of my TV so hopefully there will be enough space in the front of it for Kinect, if not, then i’ll be buying the floor stand.
