We’ll Continue To Improve PlayStation Plus – Sony

Non-content based services still on the cards.

Just a tit-bit of PlayStation Plus related news to keep the fires stoked, especially since the recent revelation that, despite your prompt allegiance, you’re not getting a free copy of Ratchet & Clank: Quest For Booty. Just Sackboy for you, early-adopters.

Responding to criticism in the comments section of the very post announcing October’s Plus content, Sony’s James Thorpe has confirmed that they are still looking at adding services to PlayStation Plus. After one of the commentariat practically rattled off a laundry list of desired services, from Cloud-based game saves to that old bugbear Cross Game Chat, James states:

That is exactly what we are trying to do for you. We feel that the content offering in Plus is very strong and getting stronger but we are always looking for new ways to improve the service. Plus is def[initely] not a fixed service but evolving all the time.

It’s important to note that the subscription package is still only a couple of months old, so there’s plenty of time to see if Sony make good on their word and add perks like exclusive access to betas and other non-content related elements to the fledgling service. Only time will tell. What incentive are you looking for most that would entice you to part with your money?

  1. Faster downloads. If that was the ONLY feature, I would pay for Plus.

    • Remember all the incredible features people suggested? Ignore every game discount there is. I would pay this moment for those suggestions.

Cross game chat (for others, not for me) including whatever popular permutations people have mentioned.

Game save synchronisation with PSN account online. No more botched jobs when moving to a new Sony PS3 after a bloody manufacturer’s fault! Even if it could be done fairly smoothly, get these saves online and saved.

Ok, I’ll stop now. When it comes down to it, I’d be happy with a basic discount across the store and oodles of real-world benefits like the above. Is it really that difficult? Sony makes it seem so each and everytime.

      • 100% agree. It seems such a waste so far when they could offer more, even if it did cost more money.

    • they will never have faster downloads, because the PS3 is still equipped with wireless b/g. This is why they are so damn slow.

  2. I’m not yet a P+ subscriber, although I am keeping a close eye on it. Personally I don’t think it’s worth the money. I know people will say the opposite, but for what I have, Sony aren’t offering anything thats worth having.
FOr me to purchase, I would like hardware warranty liek continuous play, beta codes for future exclusives. PSN games that aren’t old.

I’m sure it will gather pace and will have some great stuff soon, but so far it’s hardly worth it for me. Although Ratchet & Clank game sounds tempting as I was thinking of buying that recently.

    • As a subscriber, i agree with you that it is not worth it (yet).

I’ve benefited very little from the discounts. When something comes out that i want, i buy it. So discounts on old/silly games/dlc is of no use to me.

The automatic d/l is no big deal and is really the only non-content feature that + offers so far.

For PS+ to benficial to both Sony and the consumer, there needs to be more services. If I pay $50 for a service and get more than $50 worth in discounts then Sony has essentially lost. If i get less then $50 worth of discounts then i lost. Now if it service based, i can justify the expense by saying that i have x-game chat, cloud saves and what ever other services/features they implement. If enought people subscribe (which i’m sure they would at that point, look at LIVE) then sony gets they $ to cover the expenses of the services and make a profit as well. Win/Win situation.

      • if they brought cloud saving, x-game chat (I’m not fussed but many others are) and some other decent services, then I would definitely be on it, but like you mentioned, discounts on stuff two months old isn’t enough to persuade some, including me.

      • Well thats your fault for buying it when you have a subscription which offers you discounts.

Fact is, it paid for itself within 2 months leaving you 10 months worth of content at no extra charge.

Sony have sold 38m PS3s, not sure how may active users they’ll be because many people have replaced or upgraded their initial purchase… they’re not going to calculate what everyone has or hasn’t bought.

If it carries on as it has started. I’ll be happy. If they’re gonna add more stuff, then I just may burst at the seems with excitement.

      • @cc_star: Exactly what I was thinking. I subbed to PS+ the moment it came out and the number of freebie minis, ps1 and full PS titles (not to mention a full digital copy of LBP) has pretty much paid for the subscription straight away. Utter win in my books.

    • I think it is worth the money, but I have LBP and Quest for Booty so I ll have to wait until they give a game I do not already own, so You are right about the age of things you get ;)

  3. The minute cross-game chat is launched then I’m subscribing. At the moment I feel that to get the most out of the service I’d need to spend more money to take advantage of the discounts. There aren’t enough features outside discounts to make it worth while for me.

    • Same thing I was thinking. You need to spend more money to take advantage of what’s on offer…most of the time anyway. Sometimes there are things for free, but really not worth the annual fee just yet. I’m waiting on cross game chat myself. Like you, as that is mentioned, I’ll be subbing. I’m sure there are allot of people that’s thinking the same.

  5. Why couldn’t Sony just offer the service that people wanted at the start of the subscription?

    • They hate us. Actually, it’s just you. They hate you!

  6. nothing. it seems to be a waste of money. its basically a overpriced rental service. and the discounts will be for games they cant sell. id rather save and buy something i can actually own/keep. but thats just my opinion

  7. How about they give us today’s stuff first?

  8. They should let us keep what we want. If things don’t improve I WON’T be renewing next year!!

    • That’s how I feel at the moment. Hope it improves…soon

  9. i’ve always been a sony ‘early adopter’, and for once, decided to wait, and am glad i did. for me, the only benefit i see so far, is the appending of a yellow cross to my psn i.d bar!
i really really want psn+ to be awesome, and when it becomes more than a discount scheme, i’m in but till then i’ll just keep my yellow insulation tape, in a cross shape, taped neatly to the right of my bravia!

  10. I really hope that they introduce cross-game chat. Not that I am personally interested in it, I just want to the constant complaining on the blog, forum or wherever to stop.
