Despite information being a little light on the ground, The Last Guardian is already high up on many ‘most wanted’ lists.
At CEDEC 2010, Fumito Ueda and Japanese animator Yasuo Otsuka discussed the power of animation in the visual entertainment industry, and how it impacts games such as The Last Guardian. Ueda-san showed off an image board which became crucial when making the game, saying;
“I made the game to give life to this picture. The game concept and the rest came after that. I think great animation is one of the most important advantages the Japanese entertainment industry has over other regions.”
To hammer the point home, Ueda-san has commented that the beast in The Last Guardian - Trico – is not just a bunch of textures, as it fully exists in the game’s world and has an animated skeleton underneath all that fuzz and feathers.
I have to say, I fully agree with his stance on animation. Whether it be a football game, wrestling game or even a 2D side scroller such as ‘Shank’ – the fluidity of the animation is of paramount importance and can actually make or break the experience.

fight you for it, tooth and nail :) I have every confidence this will be (for me at least) the defining software in the PS3′s burgeoning catologue.

for me a game is a game doesn’t really matter as long as it is fun

Me too, I completely missed out on them the first and would love to play HD remakes. Hopefully they will do a God of War style trilogy boxset – I would buy that day one for sure!

It’s worth picking up an old PS2 for them if it doesn’t happen and if you’ve a mate with a projector……

Same here. Have only played SotC, and loved it, would be unbelievably awesome to play both it and ICO in HD with trophy support.
As for The Last Guardian, I truly feel some kinda special bond with me and the game even now. Easily my most anticipated game this gen, going to be amazing!

Great news. I remember the videos looking at the development of the game and how the animation was being treated with such attention to detail. Even down to the tail flipping and curling properly depending on what Trico is doing.

Ico was ace. I suspect they’ll knock out an HD version for the PS3 in the run up to this.

There’s certainly enough call for it. I’m willing to bet the entire audience who played it on PS2 would pick it up again along with all the new converts who come into the fold.
