Kojima Talks Trophies and 3D For MGS4 “Complete”

It’s PS3 gamers’ great white whale: trophy support for Metal Gear Solid 4. OK, so trophy support for Valkyria Chronicles and a host of other older games could also be added to this Moby Dick analogy, but there’s no doubting that, when it comes to PS3 fans clamouring for a trophy patch, MGS4 is probably top of the pile.

Konami has been relatively silent about the whole thing, throwing our a cursory “we hear you” every now and again as a sign that they weren’t ignoring their fans. Not that they then went and invested the time and expense in creating the patch, of course. It’s a question that will never die it seems as, commenting on Twitter, series mastermind Hideo Kojima has dug up the old MGS4 trophy corpse yet again for another shambling dance across the internet. It’s not that he doesn’t want to do it, he claims, it’s just such an investment of time and effort would take away from working on a new game. He states:

“I wanted to make a ‘Complete Version’ with trophy support and 3D, but if I did that I wouldn’t be able to work on a new game. I wonder if someone else would make it for me.”

We wonder, too, Kojima-san. We wonder, too.

  1. I still want Trophies! I haven’t played (part from the beginning) and I’ve been holding on to it in the vein Trophies would arrive. Don’t tease us Kojima!

  2. MGS4 needs trophies! I would love to play it again with trophy support. Stuff the 3D support just patch in the trophies! It can’t be that hard, games have done it lot’s of times before now and I’m sure a ‘junior team’ could handle it – why does he have to personally oversee something as minor (in MGS universe terms) as trophies? There must be some kind of infrastructure in place in the background already to support the badge/animal unlock thing when you complete the game – can’t they just build from that?

Oh and way to get my hopes up with a misleading headline TSA!!!

    • “There must be some kind of infrastructure in place in the background already to support the badge/animal unlock thing when you complete the game – can’t they just build from that?”

Indeed, just like they did with Uncharted.

  3. I started it late, then stopped when rumours of a trophy patch started, then my old PS3 died so I lost the saved game so need to start over. May as well take this as a sign that trophies aren’t going to happen.

  4. I can’t imagine adding some Trophies can be that hard and he would please so many people.

Actually I am still surprised that so little games received a Trophy patch. I mean, I think the time they have to put into it doesn’t weigh out the sales boost, no (though I think by now most “no Trophy” games have passed their momentum).

    • I spoke to a developer once about this and it’s not as straight-forward as you might think. Going through another approval process alone is a costly and time-consuming exercise.

  5. Can Sony do it?

  6. I don’t really care about trophies and I never have, they don’t do anything once you have got them but give you something to brag to your friends about. MGS4 was a brilliant game, with or without trophies. I fail to see how, after only a few short years of trophy support and multiple generations of games without them a game is now classed as worthy or not by whether it has trophy support.

  7. If there was a trophy patch for MGS4 I would play through it again, just because I know I’d have a bloody good shot at platinum.

  8. I find it funny when people claim they would ‘invest’ in the game. No you wouldnt, you’d buy the cheaper 2nd hand version which Konami wont see a penney and patching trophys and 3d costs money.

    • You might have a point, but I don’t think it would’ve applied if they did that when MGS4 went Platinum. I kinda expected Trophies then.

  9. I personally ace never played mgs but if they brought a 3d version and trophy support for this I would defiantly be interested…there’s a lot of older games if you Ike if they just slapped 3d support onto them they would be be regenerated ir you like…..-any sort of FIGHT NIGHT in 3d and with move would be amazing!!

  10. Have to admit I’ve been pretty shocked with Konami’s approach to MGS4’s post release handling. With past MGS games they were barely done counting opening day takings before they were talking about some new or revised version of whichever game was on the way but with MGS4 the amount of milking they’ve done of the fans has been pretty much non-existant, and lets face it, if ever there was a game they were likely to be able to make a killing on DLC with, it’s this one.

Missed the boat big time at this point though.
