39The official Room299 website might still be ‘coming soon‘ but the event’s happening now over in the Netherlands. We’ve got a friend of the site at the travelling show and he’ll be reporting back as soon as possible, having played the latest versions of several big PS3 games.
In the meantime, though, here’s a couple of videos of Gran Turismo 5 from Room299, grabbed from GAF. The first shows what looks like the E3 version with the GTRs flying around the ‘Ring, the second the Citroen rally rar whipping around the Toscana rally course.
The game’s looking fabulous.

Mmmmm.
We all know its going to be visually amazing and have done for years. The problem I have is that it still looks strangely “soul less” to me. Not seen any decent evidence of damage modelling or mechanical damage, still got invisible walls to push you back onto track and the opponent AI on the nurburgring video looks as bad as always, just a procession of cars sticking to an invisible racing line waiting for you to overtake them.
As has always been the case from the GT team, they understand better than anyone how to create a “Driving Simulator” but seem to be lacking when it comes down to actual “Racing”.
I really do hope I am wrong as I’ve been really looking forward to GT5 having played every GT title released, just a bit worried its going to be a technical masterpiece with no heart…

Same here, fella. How can you suck the life out of rallying for god’s sake? It’s one of the most hell-for-leather motorsports there is!

I quite enjoy the surgical precision but I know what you mean about the lack of soul. There is no aggression or defensiveness on display and AI has always been GT’s downfall. After such a long development time you’d hope they have finally nailed that but I’m not sure

We’re a visual species but I’d rather have the graphics sub-par and a really stunning game with killer AI and some genuine soul/character breathed into the franchise.
There are a good handful of reasons to GT5 but, sadly, there are also a handful of reasons to leave it alone. If only they were addressed, there’d not be a dry seat in the house!

This is why I get so annoyed about the constant adding of new modes to the game. WRC, Nascar, Karting (WTF!) etc. Hopefully they have sorted out the actual gameplay aspects that people have been complaining about for years.
Lets hope the online MP is well implemented as it could be GT5′s saving grace.

Very impressive. I tend to think that GT feels very sluggish and slow, especially when you just bump your way around the ai, however this demo definately gave a sense of speed and the graphics were absolutely amazing.
I really hope they have more realistic crashes/damage. Even if they just make you slow down when bumping into the car in front. My tactics were always drive as fast as possible and use the car in front to brake instead of using my own brakes!

Prologue added some penalties for using other cars as brakes on the later challenges. Still not the same as you actually wrecking your car as in games like Grid, NFS-Shift though, then you have to actively aviod other cars as in real racing.

Can anyone tell me if PD has got rid of that awful tyre screetching sound which offends my ears every time I take a corner above 20mph in GT5:P? I wouldn’t mind so much but the sound and severity of the squeal is the same if you take a tight hairpin at 30mph or a slight bend at 130mph. It’s the only part of the GT series which ruins its “real simulator” tag.
