Sony has announced the release of Firmware Update 3.42 for the PS3. They haven’t gone in to much detail as to what the update actually does – with SCEA’s John Koller saying the following on the US PlayStation Blog.
“Hi everyone! A minor update to your PS3 system is now available via system software update v3.42 that includes additional security features.”
We think it’s in relation to you know what. It seems that although the EU Blog has yet to be updated, 3.42 is available in EU territories too (thanks PoolieMike).

how long before the ’3.42 broke my ps3′ threads start

Thats why i wait a day to see the responses as about 2 years ago an update did indeed break my console , it would load up to the XMB screen but there was no XMB bar just the wavy thing ! Sony where very good and admitted their error and it only affected a few thousand . Obviously paranoia spread with these releases but when it has actually happened to you its natural to be cautious !

Great , in years gone by (on my Speccy (sorry Sir Clive) i would have taken part but these days a consoles success to a degree depends on staying pirate proof. With the PS3 so far having been so good i imagine game companies see PS3 as the safest option .

I keep longing for proper subtitle and mkv support – will it ever happen?

I for one hope so, avi’s are so the 00′s

Of course it won’t happen.
There is no incentive for Sony to natively support .mkv. 99% of .mkv that get put on ps3s are pirated hd movies. Why would Sony make it easier for people to steal films when they want you to buy their blu rays?

Because they love us more than they love money..?
Besides, why support divx in the first place then?
A lot of people get harddrives and convert their DVDs into mkv (and avi) to have it available on their “media centre”, and mkvs are great as they support multi audio and subs.

That’s like saying Sony shouldn’t support MP3! There are legit users and buyers around. :-)

It’s nothing like supporting mp3 Mike. Legal mp3s are available everywhere.
Scav, DivX now offers .mkv. Why have Sony not updated the version of DivX on the PS3 to this version? It looks like a very deliberate choice to not offer .mkv. Have a look at BluRay rips on any torrent site out there. It’s all .mkv.
I think they have allowed Divx in the first place in order to enable me to download and watch as much smutty filth as I can before I go blind…..

why can’t we do other things while playing music anymore (e.g. internet browser or look at photos)?

*30 seconds to mars
I’ve been doing it for absolutely ages, so it might be a corruption of your firmware or a problem with your console or something? I’m not too sure, sorry :(

Can’t get on my PS3 atm, but I KNOW that if you cannot listen to music and browse the web, you need to change your audio output frequency or something.

Just reading that work has started on porting the PS2 & Dreamcast emulators to the PS3, 2 worthwhile projets but piracy and waning 3rd party support would be too high a price to pay

Erm would your “worthwhile projects” be running pirated PS2 and Dreamast games?
07/09/2010 at 09:42
Member since: Forever
No, of course not… PCSX2 runs actual PS2 games (of which I have a large stack) and NullDC runs Dreamcast discs (of which I have a few)
There’s nothing illegal/unlawful/against EULA about it. Both are open source projects which contain zero copyrighted code, and both are capable of running discs which I have purchased.

Which pc drive do you use to read the gdroms for dreamcast games then cc_star ? I was under the impression no pc drive can read them.
