Officially licensed PlayStation 3 controllers not only look better, they work better too, and whilst you might have to pay a few quid more for one, at least they’ll continue to function post firmware 3.50, as it appears Sony are thinking about blocking some unofficial ones.

“Counterfeit PlayStation 3 Wireless Controllers,” says the Consumer Alert on PlayStation.com, “which are practically identical in appearance to genuine PlayStation 3 Wireless Controllers, have been discovered in the market.  SCEA advises consumers to be cautious when buying PlayStation 3 Wireless Controllers from uncertain sources as the quality, reliability and safety of counterfeit products is uncertain, and in some cases, may be dangerous.”

The statement continues.

“It is possible that some counterfeit product may ignite or explode, resulting in injury or damage to the user, your PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system, or other property. Moreover, SCEA does not support continued functionality of counterfeit or unlicensed controllers in system software updates and these devices may cease to function in the future because of system software updates.”

Reports suggest this is mainly in reference to a few PS2-PS3 controller adaptors, some arcade sticks and some Dual Shock 3 ‘copies’ from the East rather than anything more elusive and sinister.

  1. I actually have a controller that looks suspiciously like a real Sony controller.. but it somewhat feels a bit different. I’m afraid it’s an imitation, and I’ll check it out right now.

    • looks like it was a fake.
thanks for pointing that out, Sony.

      • be careful, it might ‘ignite or explode’!

      • lool, ignition or explosions are CRAZZY!
        (really?)

    • I dont think it is saying that sony are going to purposely try and stop these controlers from working, just that future firmware updates may render them useless, sorta included as a tactic to make people think they are working on a way to stop them and hence, make them think twice about buying them

      • my fake controller stopped working right after doing the update. I wasn’t certain it was a fake before, but now I am.

  2. I only ever buy original controllers

3rd party ones (even approved ones) just feel cheap & tacky by comparison

    • Plus they never last and are far more likely to explode when thrown at the wall :)

    • Are there any ones that actually work without using a USB port?

      • There are a small handful that use the Blutooth connection, but there are rare :P

    • For my PS2, I bought a Logitech Wireless controller and have to say that quality wise, It’s pretty top notch like most Logitech stuff. Other than that, it’s Official Sony stuff all the way.

    • same i only like the feel of the original

  3. Wow, exploding controllers! Q’s started working at Sony now.

    • Well, he would have, if he wasn’t dead (it was the exploding controllers).

      • Q isn’t dead. John Cleese took over from Desmond Llewelyn

      • No Q dies when Cleese took over

      • Shows what I know about the Bond universe. I would have thought Basil would have been R or something.

      • I’m sure his name was R.

      • Mind you by the same logic, Dan Craig would probably be 013 (not 007) or something.

      • Yeah, Q retired, coincidently just before Desmond Llewelyn was killed in a car crash.
Cleese took over who Bond (Brosnan) jokingly referred to as R

but then the whole ridiculous shenanigans were dropped for the Casino Royale re-boot

      • Ah yes, the legendary 007 wit, or at least half of it.

      • theres a theory that states that james bond is not a single person, but a code name given to a series of different agents.

it explains away the different actors portraying the role (different personalities, appearance etc.) and the fact that the films settings span so many decades.

it is of course unofficial, cool though, no?

      • Except for the fact that, in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Bond (Lazenby) gets married to Tracy Draco who is then shot and dies. Later, in For Your Eyes Only, we see Bond (Moore) laying flowers at the grave of his deceased wife, Teresa (Tracy), who supposedly died in 1969 (the year of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service) and references the film with the words ‘We have all the time in the world’ on the gravestone. This is as he kills Blofeld to get revenge for her death.

Later Bonds also find the subject of marriage, the loss of a wife or loved one difficult for this reason. So no, they were always the same person in the books and they’re meant to be the same person in the films.

  4. So this is not the third-party USB dongle connecting jobbies you often get bundled with the console cos they are cheaper? Just rip-off hooky ones that are pretending to be official, yes?

  5. I used to get controllers by madcatz when i was younger and couldn’t afford original pads. now though, i have all official pads, so no worries for me… As long as the FW only stops the fakes from being used and not ligit non sony pads, then its all good IMO. not everyone can afford official pads

    • Sony would make enemies of some VERY important third party suppliers if they killed those! Imagine if your Logitech G27 stopped working?!

      • id be very pissed if they written off my wheel, when i get it that is.lol. selling my wii next week, using the cash to go towards the wheel ready for GT5

    • I dont think they mean madcatz kind of controllers, (they are completely legal arent they?) but just rip offs of the official dualshock3, made in asia, ive seen them in ebay.

  6. I just hope they don’t stop Blutooth remote control adaptors from working like they did in a previous software update

  7. LOL and Sony never sold a single exploding battery ever?

    • I think Sony know the controllers have a danger of exploding because they manufactured the batteries for them :p

  8. I don’t think I have ever bought a 3rd party controller, on any console, the reason is quality. Shame for those who like to though.

  9. It also makes it a complete nightmare to use PS3 Media Server to stream content *shakes fist*

  10. I’m pretty sure this is for fake knock offs, not third party controllers.
