It looks like US retailer GameStop are running a regular Gran Turismo video reveal, with today’s first effort being the never seen before Course Designer. You can view the video at the product page (there’s no way for us to embed it) but we’ve grabbed a few screens from the movie below.
It looks great, more flexible than we’d imagined anyway, and the option to finally create your own tracks (albeit within certain constraints) is welcome indeed. Sure, it’s hardly ModNation Racers but for pure petrolheads I’m guessing this is going to be one feature that will keep them coming back.
You can read our hands-on with Gran Turismo 5 here.
Our US readers can pre-order the game at GameStop whilst watching the video…

Is there an option to replace the tire-screech sound?

Here’s hoping that someone much more talented than me will start creating classic F1 tracks for this game.

Where is the video on that page? Either I am being dumb or missing a plugin

There’s a Watch Video panel under the Street Date Guarantee. To be fair, 3shirts, I’ve just seen the clip and it’s horrendous. It looks utterly bereft of features (both in the editor/maker and when test driving it). See what you think (if you can see it).

Hmm, works in IE. Must be a plugin issue with Firefox

Didn’t work with my Firefox either at first. Worked after a reload though.

I can only see 2 videos there: the weather trailer and a nascar trailer. However, the track editor movie is here:

(They’ve put it on youtube, so you should be able to embed it in the article now?)

Couldn’t really see what options etc. there are.
Hopefully there’ll be another video with a lot more details.

I don’t care so much about track editor so this is just a bonus.Their are already many courses on the disc that are enough for me.

I think they should have scrapped the track editor and go-kart racing and used the space for more real tracks and cars, like a recreation of Brooklands for excample.

Yep, because GT5 is really lacking when it comes to cars. Only 900 pfft.

Well, I meant mainly tracks, as Forza has more of them.
And when it comes to cars, on release the game will only have like 300andsomething so they could fit more of the other 6-700 on the disc.

Um, no Kenny, at release the game will have over 900 cars. I don’t know where you’re getting your information from, but it’s wrong.

Kenny, the game as around 900 cars and they may struggle to get any more tracks on the disc seeing as they have filled a blu-ray! Quality versus quantity.

on a related note, is it more or does the track editor not let you design the shape of the track? if so more of a generator then designer?

The track creator (note: not editor) has a number of paremeters that you can alter with sliders. The game then generates a track based on these parameters. So we won’t be seeing any recreations of Monaco or Silverstone I’m afraid.
I imagine this may be greater developed in GT6.

Damn, I pre-ordered from shoptoski.net.

The point of GT is realism, you don’t need a course editor for that. Nice to see an extra that isn’t a DLC you have to pay for though, probably a trial run for GT6 when you will!

Don’t really get this
You choose how many sections you want and it auto-generates a track?
I suppose it means that in addition to the tracks in the game there is a load of extra possibilities though this, but what an odd way to do it.
Also
urgh – tyre noise
double urgh – GT HD Concept style static race fans, looks pretty ridiculous standing there mid-cheer with their arms in the air… a 16bit 2 frame animation would have been better ;p

Basically what happens is you choose the track style (location), track surface (gravel, snow, tarmac), circuit type (point to pint like a rally stage or a normal circuit) track surface, weather, then you select the number of sections. Then you can set parameters for each section. For example how wide the road is and how twisty it is, or how many straights there are, what the road camber is like. Then it will auto generate a track within the parameters that you have set.
I think it will be fantastic for Rally stages as well as for having races with friends where no-one has a track advantage.
It wil be great for competitions and stuff to.

At least the engine notes sound better. I can’t remember if the track editor gives you the option to share your creations online or not.
