TSA’s Top 100 of 2011 – #99 FIFA 2012

Only two entries in and our first upset! Sure, it might be hard to anticipate a title that you’ve practically been playing for the last umpteen years, but the fact that EA’s perennial footie game didn’t score higher in our expectation list is something of a surprise. It also suggests another thing: if PES 2012 is in this list, we’re looking forward to it a tad more than its nearest rival.

Of course, FIFA 2012 has yet to be formally announced. Then again, we don’t announce the fact that there will be a Christmas each year either. It’s possible that we, as a team, really do want to play FIFA 2012. In fact, we may want to play it very, very much. After all, the series has numerous fans here at TSA, and there is little doubt that many of us will not only pick it up but thoroughly enjoy its numerous enhancements when it does appear next year. Its low placement on the list, however, does suggest one thing – we’re not really chomping at the bit to play a game that, traditionally at least, barely gets more than a lick of new paint each season.

EA’s Peter Moore has spoken in the past about shaking up the franchise, even moving away from its dogged annual release pattern. Until such a sea-change occurs for the franchise, future outings are destined to lurk just above the relegation zone in terms of anticipation. Is it possible we’re we being a mite unfair to the stalwart football title? Perhaps. Or maybe we’re just a little more excited about the possible innovation we’re hoping to see in the other 98 games that feature ahead of it on this list.

  1. too early to be thinking of fifa 12, 11 only been out for a few weeks,

    • The list is simply the games we’re looking forward to next year. If it’s got a good chance of getting a release, and it was ranked accordingly, it will make the list.

The fact that FIFA 2011 is just out really has no connection to the premise of our top 100 of 2011.

  2. FIFA 2012 is an even-numbered game, therefore there won’t be too many changes.
    Bring on PES!

    • but so will PES 2012! :P

      • But PES don’t have their attention diverted by a World Cup or a Euro Championship release like FIFA have with their even numbered release.

(This is the pattern that people have noticed FIFA’s are little more than a squad & kit update, unlike odd numbered years when real tangiable improvements are made)

      • well, yes but by making more games, they are constantly seeing what works and what doesn’t and how to improve for the next game.

      • But 2011 their wont be any euro or world cup fifa game.

      • They will be working on Euro 2012 all right. They need to improve the gameplay to justify people spending money on both FIFA 2012 and Euro 2012, therefore improvements will be spread between both, and possibly into FIFA 2013 also.
Remember, Euro 2012 doesn’t start until June, but the game is out in March, and will have been developed for some time before.

  3. I’m looking foward to Fifa 2012, as I’m not picking up 2011.

I wonder if we are going to se a Euro 2012 edition :)

  4. I’ll be all over this.

Got all the PS3 FIFAs, so can’t see myself not grabbing this one.

  5. What more can they do to improve?
Graphics, and a third dimension. Now I’m sure that will happen. If not, I won’t be buying it.
I think Fifa will go 3D, but I’m not sure about PES. They are still catching Fifa up in HD!

    • If you’re talking about graphics, PES is streets ahead, however if you’re talking gameplay then it comes down to whether you want an accessible fun game or a deep & tactical game

      IMO

      • gameplay, and online features. I think it would be best for PES to try and best these first before they place their all into 3D.

      • Just wanted to say cc that the comments you left after the pes review went live is what made me get the game after nearly giving up on it. After being pretty frustrated with it for about three weeks over the last few nights it has started to click. It’s definitely a game that rewards you after putting time into it. I haven’t enjoyed a pes game this much in years.

  6. Fair placement on the list really and unless PES does a complete over haul I can’t see it featuring on the list, if it is it shouldn’t be much higher than then Fifa.

  7. A 3D announcement would increase my interest drastically

  8. Hell yeah!

  9. What better than the original PES? that’s crazy haha

  10. SWOS was Boss but a shout out for Matchday 2 and Emlyn Hughes International Soccer , dont forget those !

    • Haha okay that to me is too old for me to remember…
