What Super Mario Bros. Could Have Been

The Mario we all know is somewhat of a gaming icon, but it seems that things could have gone very differently for the moustached one if Nintendo had followed through on an original game design.  The 25th Anniversary Boxset, which has been released in Japan, includes some design documents which list an interesting control scheme considered for Super Mario Bros.

  • Left: Walk Left
  • Right: Walk Right
  • Up: Jump
  • Down: TBA (Duck)
  • B: Run (Accelerate) (Rocket->Shoot)
  • A: Attack (Depending on Item) (Bare Hands->Kick; Rifle; Beam Gun)

Rifle?  Bare handed attacks?  Beam Gun?  A very different beast to the Mario we know today, and one that piques our interest.

  3. Maybe the nintendo uncles told the nintendo nephews and it had to be omitted from the final design

  4. Rifle gun, although it sounds strange is more coherent to he puts on a raccoon hat and can suddenly fly

  5. a beam gun? surely a welding gun would have been more appropriate
