28The PlayStation Network will be down for maintenance today for several hours. The process is expected to start at just after 4.00pm BST and finish at 12.30am BST. During this time, users won’t be able to access the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home or Account Management, and may encounter difficulty while signing in to PSN.
UPDATE: I’m an idiot and messed up the times. The article has been edited to display the correct times of between 4pm and 12.30am.

You’d think they’d time it to be in the middle of the night wouldn’t you? Having said that, it may then clash with another time-zone where there would be more activity than us.

It will be night time in Japan and that is where worldwide maintainence takes place from – even though Japan has the smallest PS3 user base. Go figure.

Do we know the reason behind the maintenance, or is the standard response of simply ‘essential maintenance’?
Seems a jolly long time to be unavailable for something simple – In fact, i don’t recall it being down for this long in the past (although i could be wrong)?

It might not effect sign in and online play, its the stores, account management etc that are down.

It is dreadful for Europe which is is practically PlayStation’s homeland.
AFAIK, it’s SCEJ who do the maintenance so it happens during their working day or to suit their obsession with the US market, as its happening during their school/working day.

I understand why a lot of Sony’s focus is on the US market and that is because the PS3 isn’t doing well there. I think that will always be the case so instead of screwing the European market over they should change the time they do work on the PSN. I know that won’t happen but trying to win the Americans over just isn’t going to happen.

Well, the PSN Store has been very slow at getting up thumbnail images for games recently, although the downloads have been fine, so maybe that’s it…
