They didn’t just mention games this evening, oh no, Activision talked money. You’ll be pleased to hear that the mega-publisher are absolutely Scrooge McDucked in cash. Frivolously diving into their golden vaults before tossing coins and rare gems playfully at one another with gay abandon, the gilded execs gleefully announced that, guess what?, they made even more money than they thought they would in Q3.

Believing they’d only take in a paltry $600 million for the quarter, the publishing giant actually kachinged a monstrous $745 million, up over $40 million on Q3 2009 results. Go Acti! Of all that beautiful, delicious money, $51 million was pure unadultered profit.

Games such as Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, Warriors of Rock, StarCraft II, the new World of Warcraft expansion, Catacylsm, and cash-cow Call of Duty were all name-dropped as helping the company toward a stellar sales quarter. *corporate high-fives all round*

Finally, it’s interesting to note that, in terms of hardware install base in North America and Europe, Activision estimate 42 million Xbox 360s, 32 million PlayStation 3s, and a staggering 63 million Nintendo Wiis will be in the wild in these regions by the end of the calendar year. Both Microsoft’s and Sony’s consoles are expected to sell 9 million units before the end of December. You can read all about it here. Warning: it’s, shall we say, somewhat soporific stuff. Bring caffeine. And an alarm clock.

  1. The hardware install base is the Americas which shows how much ground Sony lost this generation around (and equally what the others gained).

Still, hats off to Activision for making such a staggering amount of money during trouble financial times (globally).

    • Afraid not. If you check slide 6 on the presentation you’ll see it states NA and Europe. I’ve added a reference to this now to the above to make it clearer.

      • Apologies. I knew it wasn’t global but made an assumption *flails self*. :-)

Recent news suggests Sony are now only a few million behind the 360 in global sales and will overtake them August 2011. Then again, Wii is still romping out in front even if sales slid a fair whack.

  2. there was an article in the paper the other day about how a mission to mars might need to be a one way trip with people willing to set up a colony there and possibly never return to earth.

  3. Kind of puts the whole ‘we’re losing soooo much money, it’s unfair’ chant that publishers like Acti have been spouting over the last few months though doesn’t it!
