‘Old school’ is the new ‘new school’ these days, with many developers scouring their back catalogue in an attempt to make you put on your rose tinted glasses and remember the good old days. Capcom is set to launch a retro attack on Nintendo’s Virtual Console this winter, with six games set to come out.
1942 – This is a classic vertically-scrolling shoot ’em up,where your main vehicle of attack is a biplane.
Black Tiger – Explore huge, sprawling levels as a powerful barbarian, seeking to defeat menacing bosses. Apparently features one of the first inventory and power-up systems ever built.
Commando: Wolf of the Battlefield – Take control of Super Joe and shoot your way—in all eight directions—towards the enemy’s territory, using grenades to wreak havoc with enemy placements in this seminal genre creator.
EXED EXES – Exed Exes is a vertically-scrolling shooter where you need to “dodge bullets! Collect fruit! And go for high scores in the most furious sci-fi insectoid shoot ’em up ever made”.
Ghosts ’n Goblins – Help Knight Arthur defeat hordes of monsters in his attempt to rescue the princess. The first (and possibly only) game in which taking a hit reduces you to your underwear.
SONSON – Experience the original adventures of the Monkey King in this action-packed side scrolling adventure. Rapidly switch between different levels of play to shoot dangerous enemies in the face!

Ghosts ‘n’ Goblins is that title that I always get excited when I see, and then I throw the controller at the telly after eight minutes of drab gameplay. Always.

Ghosts n’ Goblins and the sequel Ghouls n’ Ghosts are great, great games but are far too difficult for modern gaming tastes… I doubt many people would finish the first level on either.
I wish other devs would be more forthcoming with their back catalogue, particularly EA

I’m not familiar with any of these games, although I’m glad they are back for people who do want them. I see nothing wrong witht he revival of old school games and HD remakes, there is clearly a market for these things and it’s in addition to the currently existing market, it’s a win, win situation from where I’m standing.
