What Move lightsaber game? we hear you clamour. Considering there hasn’t been one confirmed, we don’t know either. That hasn’t stopped Anton Mikhailov, a member of Sony’s R&D division, weighing in on Microsoft’s attempt at recreating a home-made Jedi.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Mikhailov states:

“There’s no way Kinect can do a good lightsaber game [...] I’m not in the product planning division so unfortunately I can’t tell you much more about that. But, technologically, it’s 100 per cent feasible.

“We can overlay objects over the controller in AR. You’ve seen that in Start the Party, and swords are a really popular one. The fidelity is certainly there to do all sorts of Star Wars kid-style action. You can very well do the lightsaber.”

It’s important to stress that this is not confirmation that there is a Move compatible Star Wars game in development. Of course, if there isn’t one, someone in Sony and/or LucasArts needs to be fed to a sarlaac pit.

  1. As they say, one of the really impressive things about Move is the ability to overlay items onto the controller – the Start the Party demo is the first thing I show people who haven’t seen it before and it never fails to impress them. A lightsaber is the perfect extension of this – I hope this is more than just hot air.

    • Start The Party is a great family game. We get t least 4 or 5 games in every week but somehow, and I can’t figure out why, my 5 year old son always seems to win ;-) .

      • Perhaps, he was born to party?

  3. It would feel odd indeed swinging a lightsaber about with no weight in my hands.

    • This the problem with Kinect games that aren’t ‘whole body’. I can easily imagine using the Move as a sword, not so much with just my hands

      • Don’t know much about Kinect so this may see a dumb point but couldn’t you hold a cardboard tube and wave it about to pretend you are holding a lightsaber, that might feel more natural than the move controller?

      • There is a youtube video floating around with someone waving around a light saber via augmented reality utilizing kinnect.

    • I gotta ask; How much do you expect a rod of compressed and controlled light to weigh..?

      • With a sodding great metal handle? Probably about the same as the move controller

      • Although the blade wouldn’t have any weight, the lightsaber still has a physical hilt, so the Move controller would be perfect!

      • I dont want to come across as a geek but…

        http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Lightsaber

There is a Mechanics section which lists the “requirements” of a lightsaber so the hilt I’d guess would have the weight of a Move controller…

        :)

      • The weight would not be an issue for a true jedi master ;)

  4. There’s so much good work being done with Kinect by the hacking community, I think if MS had of showed off this sort of research (which their devs must have done) rather than sugar-sweet families then the ‘core’ might have been on-board more from the start, rather than have the uphill struggle they’re going to have.

I’m pretty sure game devs are doing a load of stuff as we speak, that we’ll get to see in games over the next year or two.

Remember, only bad games are made within a year’s dev time, pretty damn good & great games take two years, and era defining games take 3-5years to build from scratch.

    • It only took 3 hours from release to hack Kinect.

    • true, i’ve seen some interesting uses for the camera, but i think move will always be able to do something like a lightsaber game better than kinect.

kinect can track your arm well enough but you need to know what your hands are doing for any kind of hand held weapon, just think of the kind of motions you’d want to do with a lightsaber, and who doesn’t want to do that little twirl thing obiwan does?
you couldn’t do that with kinect.

and even just for combat, you need to be able to move the weapon with your wrists, not just your arm.

  5. Games that you can’t help think would be awesome on the PS3 (with Move).

    • Horror genres with a torch/flashlight (think: Alan Wake with Move).
    • Sorcery (I think everyone’s very curious to see how that goes).
    • Most sports games, if done well.
    • Star Wars games – DEFINITELY!
    • Hack ‘N Slash games (Golden Axe but in a 3D world with decent progression and levelling up)

When it comes down to it, a multitude of games that even a large portion of hardcore gamers would be exceedingly entertained by.

  6. A Move Lightsaber would be the best thing in the world. FACT!

    • i agree,if the move was implemented in some kind of battle coliseum type game then the navigation controller would not have to be used, this would mean they could implement dual wield and if the controller is held in a specific way you are able to pull the trigger button to use force powers, the trigger button is a big plus for move, due to this i think the move would be better than kinnect for a lightsaber game.

  7. Do want! Of course it would be better, a controller with 1:1 that you can hold and be a lightsaber, or a less then 1:1 no controller, where you wave yours arms around … i know which one i would like!

  8. The lightsaber demo that someone has done with kinect looks good but it’s really, really slow… and uses a stick! :)

  9. Shopto had a pretty strange Sony promoted advert thing on facebook the other day for a lightsaber & lots of people were speculating that a crappy plastic lightsaber attachment was coming for the move (but not speculating why interestingly enough) – Is it possible that they in fact had a pretty early ‘reveal’ of a Move enabled star wars/lightsaber game???
