And so it begins. With the recent news that certain unscrupulous hackers had managed to overcome whatever security Sony had built into the last major firmware update, 3.50, comes the inevitable (and rather timely) response: 3.55.
System software 3.55 is “a minor update that adds a security patch” according to the US PlayStation Blog, which might not be able to reverse any current progress by those insistent on breaking the rules but it will (hopefully) keep them off the PSN, ensuring that your online games are free from those with less than legal copies of games.
If there’s anything else in 3.55 we’ll let you know (and the comments on the Blog are insistent that this is a terrible update) but it’s likely that this is purely just a security booster. Sleep tight.

Good to see they’re catching up with the hackers, but we culda had a little Christmas treat in this update….maybe before Xmas Sony?

I quite like it… Not as good as the Halloween one, but better than the Blue Toad Murder Advent Calendar.

As long as it keeps those pesky pirates offline, I don’t mind these interim updates

I think we will see FW3.60 in the near future, possibly in the next few weeks. The reason i say this is that Sony are advertising ITV Player and Music Unlimited as part of their PS3 xmas campaign so that tells me that those apps will be added very soon. Maybe just via a store update or part of a larger firmware….

ITVPlayer?
I think if you’ve missed shit TV once then you’ve dodged a bullet & should be thankful, not try and catch up with it o_O

It stops (for now) the firmware downgrading that I reported on in November
Hey Sony I’m not a hacker/cracker/pirate/exploiter I’m getting a bit fed up of this cat & mouse game… It’s not like I get any benefit

Although I’m not interested how about Sony give some free avatars/theme away when they do an update which adds nothing other than protecting your business interests

It’s unavoidable though really, as mildly inconvenient as it is, Sony have to protect their system. Blame the hackers trying to get free games, not Sony!

Yeah, I normally do, but it’s getting tedious and it’s Sony’s eco-system, Sony’s the one raking in the billions but I’m the one inconvenienced every-time a freeloader so much as farts :|

How about blaming Sony? Their removal of Otheros added a lot of talent to the list of people willing to break the PS3 security. Now that the removal has proved pointless they should put it back. Until they do I’m cheering for the hacker team.

Publishers only have themselves to blame, constantly trying to rip off there customers with online passes and expensive DLC. and you will probably find that the games that are most at risk by pirates are crappy games (EA games) that people will only spend a couple of hours on.
i think games like what rockstar make or say call of duty will not lose any buisness because of pirates because they are games that people permanently want in there games collection.
* I dont condone piracy, but EA and others are no better IMO

Oh cc_star, if you think it’s tedious now you ain’t seen nothing yet. We’ve only had 3 security updates so far off the top of my head, this will now continue for the entire lifecycle of the console.

*sigh* They could have included something extra – the new pixeljunk visualiser for instance :(
Incidently and forgive my ignorance but what does the new “Permalink” in the comments do? I would click on it but it sounds kinda… permanent :)

I was just wondering what that was as well. And as I’m in work I’m too scared to click on it to find out what it does :)

Don’t worry, you can click it. :P It just gives you a link to that exact comment.

I personally would like to see a bit of a change to the whole XMB in a firmware soon. I want something that actually makes a visual difference, I am glad that they are patchiong regularly and have no problem with it but i do want to see something come out of those patches not just under the bonnet security tweaks.

The XMB is a cross platform UI, if they change it it’d have to be renamed, or every platform it was on (TV’s BDP’s, PSP’s) would have to be changed to match.
However I would like to see it tidied up. Remove everything that’s not needed (Photo Gallery, iPlayer, LoveFilm, Video editor, Life with PlayStation, multiple store icons), then have all them as downloadable apps on the PSN Store, so if you want it, download it, otherwise you’re XMB will be uncluttered.

I don’t mean a full overhaul of it completely. just some nice changes i agree with all of what you said. it definatley needs a tidy up or the ability to hide icons.

i half expected maybe some these common sense features:
TRUE background patch downloading for PS plus users.
Online game save file space (only needs to be 10mb).
Cross game chat (in game skype…?)
A video of Kevin Butler overwhelming you with reasons not to hack the ps3 when you next sign in to PSN.
Not hard lol?

Currently downloading to my USB, should save some of my gaming time. :]

I always do that, its usually faster than on the ps3 as everybody’s dl’ing it at the same time.
