The net is ablaze this morning with rumour that Activision are primed to announce a “second-tier” subscription service for their popular Call of Duty series. The source of the speculation comes from renowned rune-interpreters Wedbush Securities, who said:

Activision remains a top pick, primarily due to the company’s potential to create and monetize a second tier of multiplayer online gaming for its Call of Duty franchise.

We expect this to occur during the first quarter of 2011.

Such conjecture flies in the face of Activision’s head honcho, Bobby Kotick, repeatedly stating that the publisher would not introduce a pay-to-play model for the franchise. Of course, Activision could have other endeavours up its giant sleeve that meets the criteria of not charging for online play in connection with the normal retail Call of Dutys while still introducing some sort of subscription based service.

  1. But bobby k didn’t say they’d keep free online gaming, he said in no uncertain terms they would not be introducing a paid model. I don’t believe this, it’s a case of analysers over-analysing again!

  2. Analysts aren’t taking into account the rise of MoH, BFBC future Respawn projects and other competition.

One thing is for sure though, Activision carry out hugely expensive research and won’t be introducing anything which wouldn’t work & whilst a vocal minority may moan they’re too business savvy to introduce simething the market can’t support

And a 2nd thing for sure is that CoD multiplayer as people know & love it will always be free or Acti will be chastised forever.

  3. Probably BS, just trying to stir up stuff with Kotick and Activision.

  4. I don’t see how this isn’t an inevitability. Look at EA’s free to play shooters and it’s not hard to see how a free CoD could have a monthly sub

    • I agree, won’t effect the main game’s multiplayer experience but they need to gets grip in the freemium era EA are cornering the market with NfS World, FIFA & Battlefield

      • * gets = get
        ** era = arena

    • I think COD is at the point to just do a free disk and pay for online. The SP is shocking, they only focus on the MP so why not just go all out and make a online only COD

      • I think the disc should be like MAG, online and LAN only too. The single player however does have compelling stories but the could do the single player as downloadable via PSN or Live. Then the ones interested in Campaign can pay separately. Although that rules out a lot of offline only gamers.

  5. Sounds like the analysts have come into work this morning and realised they have nothing to do so have decided to try and wind Kotick and all CoD fans up because that way they drum up lots of hype and get their names high up on Google.

  6. As long as they leave the core mulitplayer alone I’ll be happy. I wont be paying for skins and differnt colour optics etc.

    • Exactly.

There may well be a freemium CoD like all EA’s free to play stuff (like nofi mentioned above) but the multiplayer component of retail CoD will always be free. Activision have said they’re not even going to replicate EAs project ten dollar single use codes

that is the best thing iv read in a while,
mabe the cod dollars or whatever they are called are a tester for a pay to play service, dl the game for free and pay for weapons ect, i think it could work so long as they keep the main game as it is

  7. I can’t see them doing it, just another analyst trying to be in the news, he succeeded it would seem.

  8. Personally don’t think this will happen. BFBC 2 is quickly becoming better and more addictive, with its slight change of gameplay to attract the COD players. Not that I like it, but anymore COD games will really need to up their game from Black Ops in order to get subscriptions.

    • Changes to attract CoD players ? The day that happens is the day i leave the Battlefield . The best thing about cod is it keeps all the kids , bad losers , 50 cent/Rihanna playing pad smashers in one place !
Are you enjoying Battlefield Vietnam Bilbo , ive been having a blast this last week or so , best tenner ive spent since well …. Battlefield 1943 !

  10. I thought I had travelled back in time for a moment there! COD makes far too much money for them to go fiddling with the service and alienating fans. It’s not like anything else gets close to their sales either, so they aren’t under much pressure I wouldn’t have thought.
